Three incumbent Ramsey Board of Education trustees will be challenged by a single newcomer in this year’s school board election, which is set for April 27. Challenger James Meiman, who ran unsuccessfully for the board last year, will again seek a seat on the board. Incumbents who have filed for reelection include Laura Behrmann, Anthony Gasparovich, and Keith Kaplan. Behrmann, who is now seeking her second term on the board, was born and raised in Bergen County and graduated from Ramapo High School in Franklin Lakes. She and her husband Brian, a lifelong Ramsey resident, have a two-year-old son. The candidate graduated from Drew University with a bachelor’s in psychology, cum laude, and Seton Hall University School of Law with a JD. She is an attorney admitted to the New Jersey Bar, the New York Bar, the United States District Court, District of New Jersey, and the United

States Supreme Court. She is employed by a large insurance company. Behrmann is president of the Ramsey Ambulance Corps and president-elect of the Junior League of Bergen County. She has been active with the Ramsey Junior Woman’s Club and the Ramsey Centennial Committee, and helped organize the 2008 Taste of Ramsey event. She is a former commissioner of the borough’s department of public works. Gasparovich is now seeking his fourth term on the board of education. The candidate was born in New York and raised in Palisades Park. He moved to Ramsey in 1993. He received a bachelor’s degree in engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology and an MBA from Rutgers University. He is a vice president and partner at Reiner Group, Inc., a mechanical contracting and engineering firm based in Fair Lawn. The candidate and his wife Rose have two sons. He is currently chairman of the board’s Buildings and Grounds Committee and chair of the Curriculum Committee. He is also a member of Finance and Personnel committees. He previously served as chairman of the Negotiations and Finance Committee and as a member of the Buildings and Grounds Committee. Kaplan has resided in Ramsey since 1996. He joined the Ramsey Board of Education in 2007 and was elected to a threeyear term in 2008. A native of Westchester County, Kaplan holds a bachelor of arts in English literature from Stanford University and an MBA in marketing from New York University’s Stern School of Business. He spent a semester at Oxford University. Kaplan is currently a mathematics teacher at an in-district charter school in Newark. He also teaches English at Eastwood College in Ramsey. He has held senior marketing roles in companies including Reuters, Comtex News Network, and Multex.com. He also runs Bergen Prep, a regional standardized test preparation and
subject tutoring organization. The candidate has been a volunteer for the Ramsey Centennial Committee and for Ramsey’s soccer, baseball, and basketball recreational leagues, where he has served in head coaching and assistant coaching capacities. He also plays in the Ramsey Adult Soccer League. He is an Assistant Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 31 in Ramsey. Kaplan and his wife have two children. Meiman is a lifelong resident of Ramsey. He holds a BS in business administration from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York, and an MBA in management from William Paterson University. He is creative director of the Kanebridge Corporation’s marketing department. The candidate is a volunteer coach and umpire for the Ramsey Baseball Association. He is a parishioner at Saint Paul’s Church, where he has served as a reader and a religious education instructor. Meiman and his wife Linda are the parents of two. Their daughter is a graduate of Ramsey High School and their son is in fifth grade.
