He and was the property manager for the Urban Farms Shopping Center in Franklin Lakes for over 40 years. He is survived by his siblings Marianne Goepfert of Bridgewater, Dolores Baills of Oakland, and Kathy Albohm of Allendale, and 13 nieces and nephews. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of WWII and the Korean War. Before retiring in 1985, he had been a state auditor with the New Jersey Treasury Department for 35 years. He served as a council member, was a Little League baseball coach, a Cub Master of Boy Scout Pack #32, a member of the board of adjustment, and he served as municipal court clerk for 16 years. He was a member of VFW Post 682, the DAV Argonne Chapter, the Ramsey Historical Association, the NRA, and The First Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife Marjorie “Peggy” (nee Campbell), his children Keith, Craig, Gail Strangio, and Scott, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Greta M. Mancini, nee Wendell, of Mahwah, formerly of Emerson, died March 4. She was 82. Before retiring, she was a typesetter with Magazine Graphics in Westwood. She is survived by her children Cynthia Holwitz and Kim Buechele, seven grandchildren, and her brother Robert Wendell. She was predeceased by her husband William Mancini, and her son Kaney Mancini. Arrangements were made by Becker Funeral Home in Westwood. Richard J. Martel of Mahwah died March 7. He was 72. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was the CFO/secretary, treasurer and partner of Terraquip, Inc., an international government contractor in Teterboro for 41 years. He served as mayor of Mahwah for 14 years. He was affiliated with the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers, the Association of the U.S. Army, and the Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce. He served as the president, vice president, treasurer, and coach of the Mahwah Youth Sports Boosters. He was a member of the Mahwah Recreation Committee, Mahwah Zoning Board of Adjustment, Mahwah Planning Board, Mahwah Housing Commission, Mahwah Town- James E. She was 85. She was a 1943 graduate of Rutherford High School. She was a member of the art classes at the West Bergen Senior Center and a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the VFW. She is survived by her husband Edward J. McCullum, her children Kathleen McCullum Trostle, Timothy McCullum, Kevin McCullum, Cindy McCullum Allen, and Valerie McCullum Feenan, 15 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He modeled for various magazines in NYC, attended Manhattan School of Aviation in New York City, and graduated from New York University. He had been an aeronautical engineer at Vought-Sikorsky-Aircraft in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and for American Airlines in Chicago. He was employed with ATF as a sales representative, and employed with Royal Zenith in Long Island as a sales manager. He was an eastern regional sales manager for Solna Corp. in Kenilworth, where he received numerous awards for outstanding sales. Before retiring in 2004, he owned JR Graphics in Ramsey. He worked in security for the ITT Company in Clifton. He is survived by his wife Pat Jones Simmons and his brother Joseph. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Eva Motichka. Arrangements were made by Bromirski Funeral Home in Jersey City. Mayor Martel (continued from page 3) Martel had been a resident of Mahwah for 38 years. He and Claudia, his wife of 47 years, had three sons and five grandchildren. Martel was semi-retired, but worked with the Federal Mortgage and Investment Corporation in Clifton after spending 41 years with an international government contracting company named Terraquip, Inc. in Teterboro, where he was one of four partners and held the title of Chief Financial Officer/Secretary Treasurer. That company was sold in 2001. He became active in the township as a member of the Mahwah Youth Sports Boosters, where he served as president, vice president, treasurer, and coach for 25 years. He served on the Recreation Committee, the board of adjustment, the planning board, and the township’s housing commission. He was elected to the council in 1992 and served as the council’s liaison to the planning board and as council president. He was also a member of the Mahwah Library Board of Trustees. Martel was affiliated with the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers, the Association of the U.S. Army, the Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce, and numerous governmental and political organizations. He was also a member of the Ramapo College Cultural Arts Board of Overseers. In 1995, Martel was selected as Mahwah’s Volunteer of the Year. The following year, he received a Distinguished Achievement Award from the Bergen County Department of Parks. He was named Citizen of the Year in 2001 by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Mahwah Lodge No. 1941. The same year, he received the first United Way Gold Award for Community Service. In 2004, he was the Mahwah Schools Foundation’s Honoree of the Year. He was elected president of the Northwest Bergen Mayor’s Association in 2007. After the death of former Mayor David Dwork, Martel was selected by the township council to assume the mayor’s position. He then was elected to that office in the November 1997 general election to complete Dwork’s term, which was to expire in 2000. He was reelected to the mayor’s position in 2000, 2004, and 2008. When he announced in 2007 that he would seek a fourth term, Martel told Villadom TIMES that he took great pride in the fact that the municipal building and the new senior center in the lower level of that building were built during his time in office, as were the Continental Soldiers Field recreational facility with artificial turf on Ramapo Valley Road, the new library on Ridge Road, and the new Mahwah Museum, which is located in the former library building on Franklin Turnpike. “I’m very proud of the fact that much of what Mahwah has today is the result of my term in office,” he said at the time.
