A glamorous, hilarious tale about a celebrity bride and her uproarious wedding follies will come to life on the Ramsey High School stage as the RHS Drama Club presents its spring musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone.” Billed as a musical within a comedy, this new hit show will be performed March 17, 18, and 19, in the Ramsey High School auditorium. The lead character, Man in Chair, lives an isolated life, brightened by escape into his favorite musical comedies, which he plays on his record player. Things abruptly change as Man begins to play a cast album from a fictional 1928 musical called “The Drowsy Chaperone.” Suddenly, the show magically bursts to life. Man’s dismal apartment is transformed into a stage set, with the cast materializing from nowhere, performing the show right there and then, in front of his eyes. The cast includes a vapid ingénue and her equally silly and dim-witted roller skating fiancé, a Latin lover who defines overacting, two gangsters who try to pass as pastry cooks, an exasperated producer, a tap dancing best man, an inebriated grand dame, a dotty elderly woman, and a forever suffering butler named Underling. As silly as these characters may sound, and as predictable as the plot may be (quite intentionally), the entire evening is made even more enjoyable by Man in Chair’s non-stop running commentary, proving his obvious enthusiasm for the show and his occasionally heartbreaking self-disclosures about his life and his world. Before its official Broadway opening in 2006, “The Drowsy Chaperone” had already received critical acclaim. Having received 13 nominations for the 2006 Tony Awards, the musical was the winner of Best Original Score, Best

Book of a Musical, and Best Featured Actress (Beth Leavel). “The Drowsy Chaperone” also won Man in Chair, Bob Martin, the 2006 Theatre World Award, and its production team won the 2006 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical. The Ramsey High School production of “The Drowsy Chaperone” features Jeremy Landes as Man in Chair. Kristina Walz is Broadway star Janet Van De Graaff, and Jackie Scheid is the inebriated Drowsy Chaperone. Kenny Clark is the fiancé, and Chris Ferrante is the Latin lover. Eileen O’Connor is Mrs. Tottendale, and Alex Zammitti is the butler. Kevin Doty and Alex Albanese are the gangsters, Marco Santoro is the harried producer, and Faith Sacher is the
essential not-so-bright girlfriend. Drew Vernon is George, the forgetful best man, and Brittany Malestein is Trix the aviatrix, who flies in to save the day. Rounding out the cast are Ciara Bosh, Ashley Gordon, Carissa Lellos, Claire Lieber, Carrie Martin, Jimmy MacWilliams, Eric March, Caity McHale, Erin O’Connor, Brendan Perry, Natalie Puccia, Alex Rockefeller, and Grace Zammitti. “The Drowsy Chaperone” will be presented on March 17 and 18 at 8 p.m. On March 19, there will be two performances, one at 3 p.m. and one at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12; $8 for senior citizens. To reserve tickets, call (201) 785-2300, extension 21500. Tickets may also be purchased at the door the nights of performance.
