The Ramsey Office of Emergency Management has held its past two meetings at the new Public Safety Operations Center on the campus of the Law & Public Safety Institute in Mahwah. The facility, nicknamed the “BC Rock,” serves as the emergency operations center for the Bergen County Police Department Office of Emergency Management and the communications center for the county’s expanding 911 capabilities. Sergeant Barry Leventhal, BCPD, deputy county OEM coordinator, served as host for the most recent meeting. He explained the functions of the $12 million facility and the systems that would make it function even if certain features failed. The guest speaker was Chief Steven Ahlstedt, coordinator of the Emergency Medical Services Academy, which is also on the L&PSI campus. Ahlstedt, who is the training officer for Ramsey OEM, announced an aggressive schedule of courses for the members at the academy. Ramsey OEM Coordinator Michael Adams announced that his department will be seeking $40,000 in reimbursement for the record Dec. 26, 2010 snowfall when he meets with FEMA representatives. He is also awaiting an Emergency Management Assistance Grant check from the New Jersey State Police. Deputy coordinators include Glen Karpovich, Bruce Greenwood and Sergeant Angelo LaManna. The radio officer is Lou Janicek, the radiological officer is Wayne Lemme, the CERT leader is Ralph Venturini, and the medical officer is Stephen Goeller.
