Donald Viggiano of Mahwah came to B.C. in 1967 and has been a major part of the school’s faculty for the last 44 years, while Thomas Fuchs of Paramus arrived three years later and has delivered 41 years of high-quality, multi-faceted service to the school. Viggiano is a native of Shelton, Connecticut, where he was a two-time All-State football selection as a fullback-linebacker. He began his work at Bergen Catholic as a physical education teacher and football coach, joining the staff of Head Coach Bob Norton, who had been Viggiano’s team- Two 40-year veterans retire from Bergen Catholic mate at Rutgers University. He spent two seasons as the varsity backfield coach, and was in line to become the head coach when Norton decided to leave B.C. in the spring of 1969. Viggiano was the B.C. varsity football coach for five seasons (1969-73), during which he led the Crusaders to five winning records and an overall mark of 27-16-2. Donovan has appointed County Public Safety Director Brian Higgins to succeed Bergen County Police Chief Uwe Malakas, who has retired. Higgins, who is a resident of Mahwah, was a county police captain when he was appointed to a public safety position in January. He will serve in the dual positions of chief and public safety director and will continue to have overall responsibility for the offices of emergency management and highway safety. Malakas is retiring after 31 years of service with the Bergen County Police and, ��� Township man named county’s public safety director earlier, with the Wallington Police. He was appointed Bergen County Police Chief last November by outgoing Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney. Donovan said that merging the chief’s position with the director of public safety post is part of her plan to improve overall efficiency and cost effectiveness through consolidation. Higgins’ salary will be $175,555, reflecting an annual savings of approximately $288,000. Higgins has been a police officer for 23 years.
