Summer Music Festival continues The 13th season of the Summer Music Festival will continue June 28 with “A Midsummer Night’s Shakespeare: Shakespeare in Music” at the Mahwah Public Library, 100 Ridge Road. Soprano Ruth Ann Cunningham, tenor Antonio Calaf, and pianist Inna Leytush celebrate Shakespeare in music, performing scenes from famous operas by the great composers including scenes and arias from Verdi’s “Othello” and “Macbeth,” Gounod’s “Romeo and Juliette,” and others. On July 6, Nada Radulovich and Cullan Bryant will perform lyrical works for cello and piano by Rossini, Rorem, Martinu, and Bolcom. Flutist Michelle LaPorte and guitarist Gerry Saulter will perform music from around the world featuring works by Piazzolla, Machado, Pujol, and Ibert, on Monday, July 11. Paddle Night planned The Mahwah Recreation Committee will host a “Paddle Night” on Tuesday, July 12, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Continental Soldiers Field/Lake Henry. (Rain date: July 19) Canoes, kayaks, and life jackets will be provided by Ramsey Outdoor Store for use by Mahwah residents of all ages. Proof of residency will be required for participation at this event. Vacation Bible School available The Ramapo Reformed Church will offer Vacation Bible School July 18 through 22 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the church, 100 Island Road. “Shake it Up Café: Where Kids Carry out God’s Plan” is open to children ages three through 12. This program will explore the festivals celebrated in the Bible, and how they relate to today. Activities will include singing, Bible stories, crafts, games, and snacks. The program is open to children ages five through 13. All new Mite players who live in Mahwah and sign up by July 7 will receive free new equipment, from helmet to skates. Tuition for Mites is $99. Chamber plans networking event The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce will hold a business card exchange on Tuesday, June 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is hosted by Key Bank, 59 Route 59, Suffern, New York. Seniors discuss current events Seniors are invited to join a current events discussion group at the Mahwah Senior Center at 475 Corporate Drive. Using a straightforward format, the program is conducted in roundtable fashion. Participants offer brief newsworthy items for discussion. American Legion seeks new members The Mahwah American Legion Brems, Hetzel, Meester Memorial Post 531 invites area veterans to join the post. Veterans, male and female, whether they served in combat or during peacetime are welcome. American Legions provide assistance with the Veterans Administration, financial aid in times of need, sponsorship of local charities and organizations, and fellowship and camaraderie. Post 531, activated in 2008, was named for Patrick Brems, Class of 1965 of Ramsey High School; Norman Hetzek, Class of 1966 and Everett Meester, Class of 1965, both of Mahwah High School. All three men were killed in action during the Vietnam War. The Mahwah post meets on the third Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the downstairs meeting room of the Mahwah Museum, 201 Franklin Turnpike. Gaines novel to be discussed Not by Bread Alone, a spiritual book discussion group, will meet on Sunday, June 26 at 5 p.m. at Panera Bread, 1300 State Route 17 in Ramsey. This month’s selection is “A Lesson before Dying” by Ernest Gaines. Set in a small Cajun community in the late 1940s, “A Lesson before Dying” is the story of a man condemned to die for a crime he did not commit and a young man who visits him in his cell. In the end, the two men forge a bond as they both come to understand the simple heroism of resisting and defying the expected.
