Each year, 25 New York metropolitan area high school students are selected to attend this six-week intensive Chinese language program during July and August. China bound Ramsey High School’s Chinese students won second runner up at the Fifth Annual Chinese Cultural Project Contest. The contest was hosted by the Asian Languages and Cultures Department of Rutgers University and the New Jersey Chinese Cultural Studies Foundation. Very cultured Taylor McNaboe, a junior at Ramsey High school, has been accepted to the China Institute’s Summer Study in Beijing program and he will be studying in China from July 7 to Aug. 3, 2011. Each summer, only 20 high school students from the metropolitan area are accepted into this program. McNaboe also received a $3,500 scholarship. China Institute’s Summer Study in Beijing program offers high school students the opportunity to receive intensive language training while being immersed in Chinese society and culture. Through rigorous small-group daily language lessons, it is expected that the students will acquire the equivalent of a full academic year of Chinese. Special features of the program include accommodations in host families with resident teenagers, cultural activities, as well as social activities with fellow students and Beijing residents, weekend overnight excursions, and community service.
