(continued from page 7) talented officers in our country, this is the ultimate honor for the Borough of Ramsey, the Ramsey Police Department, and Tim and his family.” Some of Shoemaker’s DARE endeavors include the DARE Fishing Derby, a fishing competition with prizes; the DARE Pool Party, which is the culmination pool party at the Ramsey Pool; DARE Skate Night, an ice skating event for students and their families; and the DARE Ziti Dinner. The showcase of the DARE year is the “Ramsey DARE Idol” competition. Any fifth grade student is invited to display his or her talents in front of panel. The top 10 performers go to the DARE Idol show, an extravaganza with singing, dancing, and videos. The finalists perform in front of a three person panel, much like the popular “American Idol” show. After the performances, the audience votes to select a Ramsey DARE Idol. One of the highlights of the DARE Idol competition is the return of former DARE Idols, who perform during the event. “Ramsey DARE has had a unique string of amazing instructors from Ray Bailey, who brought DARE to Ramsey, through Dave Stitz, Paul Vassallo, and Kane Zuhone. Each of them made it (his) mission to improve the program,” Shoemaker told Villadom TIMES. “By the time it got to me, there was nowhere to go but into the realm of the ‘unrealistic.’ My team has accomplished what I believe few others could, but only because we are standing on the shoulders of some spectacular predecessors. I owe them, and Chief Gurney, a huge debt of gratitude.” In 2009, Shoemaker received a trio of honors: He was named 2009 Drug and Alcohol Resistance Education Officer of the Year for his innovative effort to promote the core values of the DARE program, received the 2009 John Rinaldi Award winner from the 200 Club of Bergen County, and earned the 2009 Shield Award presented by the Ramsey Knights of Columbus. Shoemaker joined the Ramsey Police Department in National DARE Officer of the Year December of 1996. Before he joined the borough’s force, he was a police officer at Fairleigh Dickinson University. At FDU, he spearheaded several community policing initiatives and helped develop a software program that enabled the force to track incoming calls for service. He was promoted to sergeant just one year out of the academy, and continued to train FDU’s employees for several years after he left his post at the university. He holds an associate’s degree in criminal justice from the County College of Morris and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and social studies from Caldwell College. He is a three-time summa cum laude graduate and a member of American MENSA and Northern New Jersey MENSA. At 19, he graduated at the top of his class at the Morris County Police Academy. Shoemaker became a certified DARE instructor in May 2004. He is an instructor at the Bergen County Law & Public Safety Institute, an emergency vehicle operations instructor, a field training officer, and conducts driver simulator training. He speaks both Spanish and English, and serves as a translator for local police agencies. He recently helped develop two county-wide training programs being used by the Bergen County Law & Public Safety Institute. He currently serves on the Bergen County Prevention Coalition and Bergen County Childhood Drinking Coalitions. He has also begun speaking in the public sector at venues such as the Bergen Regional Medical Center and the Bergen Academies. The two websites he launched, mpoweredparent.com and timothyshoemaker.com, provide parents and professionals outside of Ramsey with inspiration and information about how to keep their families drug free. Some of his written work can be found on the Partnership for a Drug Free America’s websites, and is featured on several other parenting sites. “What we have here in Ramsey is working, and we need to spread it,” Shoemaker added.
