Women’s support group available The First Presbyterian Church at 15 Shuart Lane will host a women’s support group on Wednesdays through Aug. 31. All women are welcome to attend. The summer meetings will begin will a short walk around the block at 7 p.m. and will continue with a discussion at 7:30 p.m. Topics to be addressed will include job loss, health and weight concerns, or simply growing older. Health walks resume The Ramsey Board of Health invites the public to join one of the four walking groups that are part of its Ramsey Walks initiative. “Ramsey Walks at Eight” meets at 8 a.m. in Varka’s parking lot at Carol and Spruce streets. The group walks from Varka’s to the Carol Street entrance to the bike path to Interstate and back. After the walk, this group goes to the senior center at Finch Park for coffee. The Monday, Wednesday, and Friday Walks meet at
10 a.m.; the Tuesday and Thursday Walks at 9 a.m.; and the Friday “Mom and Me” Walks at 9:15 a.m. The starting point for these walks is the Interstate entrance to the Ramsey bike path (off Addison Street). The groups walk along the bike path to Prospect Street and turn around and return to Interstate. The walks typically take 30 to 45 minutes. The terrain is easy, and there are benches along the way if someone needs to rest. To participate in any of these walks, just show up at the bike path entrance at the appointed time. Adult reading club seeks members The Ramsey Public Library invites the borough’s adult cardholders to participate in the summer reading club, Novel Destinations. For every book review slip filled out, an entry into the grand prize contest is made. Entry forms are available at the circulation desk. Two Novel Destinations tote bags chock full of goodies and runner-up prizes will also be awarded. The first-ever “Book Brag” will be held on Monday, July 18 from 7 to 8 p.m. Attendees are invited to brag about a book and receive some great reading tips in exchange. Refreshments will be served. Seniors are invited to join the outdoor bocce group, or get out in the early 8 a.m. and join the walkers for a stroll, followed by coffee at the center, play shuffle board, pool, ping pong, chess, or bocce. The Crafty Ladies will continue to crochet and knit on Mondays at 1:30 p.m., and Sunday afternoon movies are still featured. Preschool program openings The Ramsey Public Schools is offering Ramsey residents a preschool program for the 2011-12 school year. The program, held at Hubbard School, will run from 8:45 to 11:15 a.m. Students attend five days a week. In order to be eligible, a general education child must be four years of age on or before Oct. 1, 2011. A birth certificate, copy of immunization records, and proof of residency will be required of those students admitted to the program.
