Tickets are now are available at Wireless World of Ramsey and Kings Pizza. Pre-event ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 15. Ramsey Police DARE Officer Tim Shoemaker explained that the Harlem Wizards first appeared in the borough last year, thanks to the efforts of then-DARE Coordinator Candi Truax, who had seen the team perform elsewhere. Although he said he was initially ambivalent about the concept, Shoemaker supported Truax’s enthusiastic proposal. Truax and her fellow 2010 DARE Coordinators Susan Turk and Regina Dudek then worked tirelessly to make the program a huge success. “She was right,” Shoemaker said of Truax’s proposal. “It was one of the best things we did all year.” In addition to the team’s demonstration of high-caliber athleticism and humor, the Harlem Wizards’ appearance focuses on family and friendship, Shoemaker said. “They gave an assembly for the school, and talked about how, growing up, drugs were a constant temptation and violence was a constant threat, but basketball helped them get through it,” Shoemaker noted. “They have a positive message that correlates with our program.” Shoemaker said it costs approximately $5,000 to bring Get ready, Ramsey! A high flying, awe-inspiring celebrity basketball game will be coming to town as the Ramsey DARE Dream Team battles the Harlem Wizards at Family Fun Night on Feb. 21. This event will begin at 6 p.m. at Don Bosco High School, 492 North Franklin Turnpike, Ramsey. The community is invited to support Team DARE’s allstar crew as they take on some of the most talented and entertaining basketball players around. This hilarious night is guaranteed to keep attendees talking for weeks. Proceeds benefit the Ramsey DARE program. Last year’s game quickly sold out all available seats, so Pictured are highlights from the team’s 2010 appearance. the Harlem Wizards to Ramsey, and DARE organizers hope to break even. He explained that donations are important to keep the DARE program’s anti-drug message coming to Ramsey students. Shoemaker has been a member of the Ramsey Police Department for 15 years, and has been working in the schools for his entire tenure. He has been the lead DARE officer for the last seven years. “The thing that impresses me most about this event is the unique way in which it expresses our community’s commitment to one another,” Shoemaker added. “We’ll have some 70 people staffing it, over two dozen playing in it, and nearly 800 attending it. From parents to teachers, to organizations and business persons, nearly every segment of our community is represented. All of these volunteer contributors are throwing their force behind a singe powerful message, ‘We are Ramsey DARE!’ It’s a statement of strength, unity, and community leadership. You can’t teach that in a classroom.” To donate to Ramsey’s DARE program, or for information about the upcoming game, contact Officer Shoemaker at (201) 327-2400. 304 S.
