January 26, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 5 Ramsey Saros to leave administrator’s post after 29 years After 29 years as Ramsey’s borough administrator, Nicholas Saros has decided to accept the post of town manager in the Borough of Teterboro. He will begin his new job next month. “The change will be great for me,” Saros said. “Teterboro allows me the opportunity to be home at night. I can cook dinner and be with my kids.” Saros and his wife Cathleen, who recently returned to her medical practice full-time, are the parents of 10-yearold Nicholas, and seven-year-old twins, Alexandra and Christina. Saros anticipates that the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend time with his children “will be a real blessing.” “Life is a fleeting moment,” Saros said, quoting his father, Gus. “It’s time.” Asked about the drop in pay from $174,000 in Ramsey to $130,000 in Teterboro, Saros said, “Money isn’t everything.” Originally from Scotch Plains, Saros received a bachelor’s degree in public administration from Kean University and his master’s in public administration from Rutgers University. He began working as an assistant administrator in Union Township with Louis Giacona. “He was a second father to me,” Saros said of Giacona, who became his mentor. “I learned so much from him.” Saros was working in Andover Township when Giacona alerted him to the opening in Ramsey. Saros applied, and was hired on his birthday in August 1982. “I’ve been blessed to work with four mayors and (dozens of) council members. We’ve accomplished a lot working together. We have great department heads and volunteers,” the administrator added. He said Ramsey is a wonderful community and indicated that he and his family will continue to live in the borough. “We wish him well,” Ramsey Mayor Christopher Botta said of Saros. “We’re sad to see him go. It has been a privilege to know him professionally and personally.” Asked about the borough’s plans to find a successor for Saros, Botta said the job has been posted and the borough is currently accepting resumes. “It will be very hard to replace Nick, with all of his knowledge and his care and concern over these 29 years,” Botta acknowledged. The Ramsey Branch of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary will host a speaker from the Alzheimer’s Association on Thursday, Feb. 3. The program will begin at 1 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge located on the corner of Lake Street and Franklin Turnpike. Memory loss that disrupts everyday life is not a normal part of aging. This program will explore the difference between normal age-related memory changes and abnormal changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia disorders. Learn the 10 warning signs, the importance of a thorough medical exam when symptoms first arise, current treatment options, and research trends. This meeting is open to the public.
