Representatives from the Division of Developmental Disabilities will present an overview of this organization’s services and how to apply. The agency provides case management and information and referral services. All are welcome to attend. Church hosts Chili Dinner The Ramapo Reformed Church at 100 Island Road, Mahwah, will host a Chili Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 5 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. (Snow date: Feb. 12.) The dinner will include homemade three bean vegan chili, with add-in choices of beef, turkey, onions, peppers, cheese, sour cream, and hot sauce. Also on the menu are chips, beverages, and dessert. Free CERT training begins Community Emergency Response Team training will be offered at the Bergen Law & Public Safety Institute in Mahwah beginning Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. Training provides residents with basic skills and information on what to do before, during, and after a disaster to aid themselves, their families, and their communities. There is no cost to participate in the eight-week course. At the completion of the program, basic CERT safety equipment will be issued to each participant. Class size is limited, so early registration is encouraged. Mahwah CERT is made up of volunteer residents who are trained to support professional first responders (police, fire fighters, EMTs, et. al.) in all types of emergency situations while serving the community in other ways during non-emergency times. Bauby memoir to be discussed Not by Bread Alone, a spiritual book discussion group, will meet Sunday, Feb. 20 at 5 p.m. at Panera Bread, 1300 Route 17 in Ramsey. This month’s selection is “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly: A Memoir of Life in Death” by Jean-Dominique Bauby. When the 43-year old editor of French “Elle” suffers a stroke, leaving him paralyzed, Bauby found himself imprisoned in an inert body, able to communicate only by blinking his left eye. In a voice that is by turns wistful and mischievous, angry and sardonic, Bauby celebrates the liberating power of consciousness. Learn about American presidents “Presidential Tidbits and Trivia” will be presented by Sid Frank from the Liberty Hall Museum on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Mahwah Public Library. Rock and roll program set Listen to the music that paved the way for rock and influenced The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and countless other artists when Rave On! The Music of Buddy Holly is presented at the Mahwah Public Library on Sunday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. Rave On! will perform “That’ll Be the Day,” “Peggy Sue,” “Not Fade Away,” “Oh Boy, It’s So Easy,” and other classic early rock songs. The band includes Chris Roselle on guitar and lead vocals, Pete Farley on bass guitar and background vocals, and Don Guinta on drums and background vocals. The program is free. School hosts Open House Young World Day School will hold an Open House on Jan. 26 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. Interested parents from Bergen, Passaic, and Rockland counties are invited to learn about the school, tour the facility, visit classes, and hear about the school’s programs. Programs include music instruction, computer classes, foreign language, yoga, and fine arts. Parents of children who are age two through grade five may choose between a traditional or Montessori program. Board seeks volunteers The Mahwah Board of Health is organizing a local team of residents and medical personnel who live or work in Mahwah and are available to volunteer in the event of a public health emergency. Both medical professionals and non-medical volunteers are needed, including nurses, nurse practitioners, doctors, physician’s assistants, pharmacists, veterinarians, dentists, data entry personnel, interpreters, telephone staffers, interviewers, runners, clerical support staff, and crowd control personnel.
