The Edward C. Syder Scholarship Foundation recently awarded scholarship grants for the 2010-11 academic year to five Ramsey residents who have exhibited excellence in both academics and community service. This year’s winners are: Varun Bhasin, Christopher Devine, Emily Dodwell, Anusha Raja, and Matthew Watters. The five winners were selected from a field of more than 17 qualified applicants. Edward C. Syder, a long-time resident and community leader in Ramsey, died in 1991. His last will and testament directed the creation of a scholarship program to benefit Ramsey residents; that program became the Edward C. Syder Scholarship Foundation. Over the past 20 years, the foundation has awarded more than $340,000 in scholarship grants. The winners are chosen by the selection board of the Edward C. Syder Scholarship Foundation, which includes the following leaders: Rev. Beverly Dempsey of First Presbyterian Church of Ramsey; Dr. Roy Montesano, superintendent of Ramsey Public Schools; Donna Hellstern of Bank of America; John DaPuzzo, District Rotary Club representative; Christopher Botta, mayor of Ramsey; John Stanczak, principal of Don Bosco High School; and Dr. Peter P. Mercer, president of Ramapo College. Donald C. Ohnegian, the long-time spokesman for the Edward C. Syder Scholarship Foundation died Dec. 13, 2010. He had been a member of the Syder Scholarship Foundation Board since the organization’s inception. Ohnegian, a Ramsey resident, had been practicing law at his office on Main Street in Ramsey since 1965.

Registration has begun for the Ramsey Adult School’s spring semester. The school offers a wide variety of courses in exercise, sports, cooking, language, dance, computers, health, pets, and an ever-expanding children’s program. All courses are taught by experienced, qualified instructors. Those looking to change careers or to enhance their required skills in their current field, are welcome to try the adult school’s online learning program, designed for the busy person. In addition to an offering of over 350 different online courses, there are many specialty career certificate programs available. The Ramsey Adult School is also offering of nearly 40 different trips to Broadway plays, day trips, overnight trips, and international trips. Even affordable cruises are offered. The adult school is open to all; Ramsey residency is not required. Overnight parking prohibited in borough
The Ramsey Police Department reminds residents that the borough prohibits overnight parking on borough streets. Emergency exemptions may be requested by calling (201) 327-2402. These exemptions are short term and will not be granted when inclement weather (snow, ice, or sleet) is expected. Ramsey ordinances may be viewed on the borough website.
