Page 10 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • January 19, 2011 Mahwah On Jan. 11, members of the Mahwah Police Department arrested three individuals for selling alcohol, which was arranged through the Internet site Craigslist for in person delivery. Mahwah detectives had seen advertisements soliciting the “Four Loko” alcoholic beverage, which has received extensive national and local legislative attention and media coverage due to numerous instances of victims suffering from severe intoxicating effects because the beverage has a high alcohol content and caffeine. Detectives answered the posts as college students in Mahwah looking to stock up on the product and agreed to purchase three cases of Four Loko for $335. The price is a mark up of over 200 percent above the average retail price of the alcoholic beverage. The negotiated price included a $47 delivery fee that the seller stipulated. The sellers and detectives posing as the college-age buyers continued communicating via telephone and advised they were driving up from the Essex County area and arranged to meet at a specified time in the afternoon at a location just off of Ramapo Valley Road in Mahwah near Ramapo College. The suspects arrived at the arranged time and location in a 2006 BMW 330 and met with the undercover Mahwah police officer and gave him the three cases of Four Loko after accepting the $330 from him in cash. They were then arrested without incident by Mahwah detectives who were monitoring the meeting nearby. The two individuals arrested that delivered the alcohol were a 21-year-old woman from South Plainfield and a 20-year-old woman Police charge three with selling alcoholic beverage from West New York. A third individual who was charged, a 23-year-old woman from West Caldwell, was identified as having facilitated the transaction with undercover detectives on Craigslist and by telephone. Her vehicle was used for the transport by the suspects. All three females were charged with selling an alcoholic beverage without a state license or permit, a fourth degree crime. All three individuals were later released and must appear in municipal court on Jan. 25. Area Activities Unlimited, a Wyckoff-based senior men’s club, is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary.
