School hosts Open House Young World Day School will hold an Open House on Jan. 26 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. Interested parents from Bergen, Passaic, and Rockland counties are invited to learn about the school, tour the facility, visit classes, and hear about the school’s programs. Programs include music instruction, computer classes, foreign language, yoga, and fine arts. Parents of children who are age two through grade five may choose between a traditional or Montessori program. Preschool, all-day kindergarten, and a multi-grade approach to grades one through five are offered. Young World Day School is located at 585 Wyckoff Avenue in Mahwah. Book group to discuss Christian concepts Not by Bread Alone, a spiritual book discussion group, will meet Jan. 16 at 5 p.m. at Panera Bread, 1300 Route 17 in Ramsey. This month’s selection is “And Now I See: A Theology of Transformation” by Robert Barron. Barron, professor of systematic theology at Mundelein Seminary near Chicago, offers an accessible exploration of Christian theological concepts. He divides his book into three sections as he examines Christianity as a source of human transformation. Barron draws on sources such as Dante, Paul Tillich, Thomas Merton, and Flannery O’Connor. All Season Chamber Players offer concert All Season Chamber Players will return to the Mahwah Public Library to perform “The Archduke” and other musical selections on Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. No tickets are necessary. Call (201) 529-2183. ‘A Eulogy for Vincent’ to be performed A one-act play starring Brendan Walsh, “A Eulogy for Vincent,” will be performed at the Mahwah Public Library on Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. The play, depicting the life of impressionist artist Vincent Van Gogh, showcases the tormented genius through a series of letters he and his brother Theo wrote to one another throughout the last 20 years of their lives. The performance features a slide show of Van Gogh’s works and pictures of important people who influenced his life. A question and answer session will follow the performance. “A Eulogy for Vincent” is free. No tickets are necessary. Seats are available on a “first come” basis. covering American artists working in the Regionalists and Urban Realists movements of the 1930s on Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Mahwah Public Library. Children’s Movie Night to benefit CFA Rainbow Academy in Mahwah is sponsoring a Jan. 14 Children’s Movie Night to benefit the Center for Food Action. The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the school located at 51 Island Road. The price of admission is one canned good per person. All items will be donated to CFA. Popcorn and juice will be served. Board of health to meet The Mahwah Board of Health will meet Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the municipal building, 475 Corporate Drive. Restaurant discount cards available The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce is offering a new restaurant discount card is as part of WinterFest, an eight-week community celebration that is now underway and will wrap up on Jan. 29. The card entitles holders to a 10 percent discount on food purchases at select chamber member eateries. Participating restaurants include: Brady’s at the Station, Fountainview Restaurant at the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel, Mahwah Bar and Grill, Mason Jar, Moe’s Southwest Grill, Olé Olé Restaurant, Ramsey Golf and Country Club, Restaurant L, Saffron at the Woodcliff Lake Hilton, Windsor Grille Restaurant, and Lounge at the Comfort Inn Conference Center. Board seeks volunteers The Mahwah Board of Health is organizing a local team of residents and medical personnel who live or work in Mahwah and are available to volunteer in the event of a public health emergency. Both medical professionals and non-medical volunteers are needed, including nurses, nurse practitioners, doctors, physician’s assistants, pharmacists, veterinarians, dentists, data entry personnel, interpreters, telephone staffers, interviewers, runners, clerical support staff, and crowd control personnel. Research materials include books on job searches, writing resumes and cover letters, interviewing, networking, franchising, starting your own business, finding a civil service job, and more. There are DVDs on grooming and dressing for success,
getting a first job, planning a career, money management, the right part-time job, and a virtual job interview. There is a new brochure called “Jobseekers” that contains employment and career information on the web. Check out the “Job Center” bulletin board postings. The library has two public computers for resume writing. There are eight public Internet computers that can be used for applying for unemployment benefits and checking out job websites. Writers’ collective accepts new members The Mahwah Library Writers’ Collective meets on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Mahwah Public Library. The group’s goal is to support adult writers at all levels. The collective will allow writers to share their stories and receive constructive feedback. Writers working in fiction and creative non-fiction are welcome and need not to be published to join. Members are encouraged to attend regularly and come prepared with copies of their work to share. Mahwah residency is not required, and there is no fee. The group is accepting new members this fall. In addition to his Scouting, church, and school activities, Floyd enjoys skiing and playing the guitar and piano. After graduating from Ramsey High School in June 2011, he plans to attend college, pursuing a degree in sound recording technology. He would like to channel his love of music into a career as a sound engineer and music producer. He plans to remain an active member of Troop 31, serving as an example for younger Scouts while assisting them along the Scouting trail.

Five affirmative votes are required to grant the use variance, and there are only six members of the board participating in the public hearing due to illness or recusals. Nevertheless, Marc Liebman, the attorney for Chai Lifeline, agreed to continue the public hearing with a six member board. Testimony at the ongoing public hearing is expected to conclude at the board’s next meeting on Jan. 19.
