Professor Edward Shannon to present history of comics Professor Edward Shannon will present “A History of Comics from Newspaper to Screen” at the Mahwah Public Library on Wednesday, March 2 at 7 p.m. America has had a love/hate relationship with comics. They are the bottom of the cultural barrel, but they have produced iconic characters like Superman and Batman. Rather than being just a handful of characters, comics are art. Like any other art form, comics have their own history, rules, structures, and aesthetics. Since the end of the 19th century, the growth of American comics has paralleled the “American Century,” reflecting our history, culture, politics, and laws. Shannon is a professor of literature at Ramapo College of New Jersey, where he teaches survey of American literature, introduction to literature, 20th century American literature, contemporary American literature, and courses in graphic novels and crime fiction. This program is free. No registration is necessary. Seats are on a “first come” basis. For information, call (201) 529-READ. The Mahwah Public Library is located at100 Ridge Road.
