Last week, 36 individuals were arrested on various dates for prostitution related offenses throughout the County of Bergen. Officials also seized more than $60,000 related to those arrests. The arrests were part of a county wide prostitution initiative. The concerted enforcement effort targeted selected locations and/or businesses in response to various citizens’ complaints made to local police departments, the Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli’s Office, and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office tip line. The cases stemmed from joint investigations conducted by members of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Special Investigations Squad, under the direction of Chief Steven Cucciniello, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, under the direction of Sheriff Michael Saudino, and police departments in Ramsey, Tenafly, Englewood, Bergenfield, Fort Lee, Edgewater, Cliffside Park and Rochelle Park, Paramus, and Fairview. Targeted during this investigation were numerous illegal massage parlors and in-call prostitution operations that have been operating in area hotels. The term “in-call” refers to a set-up whereby customers respond to a location supplied and paid for by the illegal operation, where the customer engages in sexual activity with a prostitute in exchange for money. Twelve massage parlors, known to be engaging in prostitution, were targeted. In all the massage parlor locations, undercover officers from the BCPO were solicited to engage in acts of prostitution. On Jan. 24, two massage parlors known to be committing acts of prostitution in Ramsey were targeted. The first location was on Spear Road in Ramsey. Two Palisades Park residents, ages 45 and 50, were charged with engaging in prostitution and with promoting prostitution and maintaining a nuisance. Police aid county wide initiative The second location was on Route 17 in Ramsey. Two Flushing, New York residents were arrested and charged with engaging in prostitution after soliciting an undercover police officer. Arrests were also made on Dean Street, Englewood, where one individual was also charged with obstruction of justice after locking the door in an attempt to preventing law enforcement personnel from entering the establishment, while advising her employees that law enforcement was attempting to enter the premises. Arrests were also made at locations on Washington Avenue and on Portland Street in Bergenfield, and on South Summit Street in Tenafly. On Jan. 26, 13 individuals were arrested at various hotels in Paramus for prostitution related offenses. A 20-year-old Englewood woman was charged with engaging in prostitution, and a 33-year-old Ridgewood woman was charged with promoting prostitution. The two were charged with using the hotels to operate their illegal “in-call” prostitution business. Also arrested were numerous individuals and their drivers, who would respond to a specific location, previously paid for by the clients, for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity in exchange for money. Arrests made on Jan. 27 took place at two locations in Fort Lee and at one location in Edgewater. On Friday, Jan. 28, additional arrests were made in Edgewater and Fairview. The individuals who were arrested were all served with summonses and released on their own recognizance. Most of the locations were closed by the respective jurisdictions as a result of health and building code violations. Prosecutor Molinelli stated that the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. He thanked the members of the participating police departments for assistance and cooperation.
