Eric Howard and James Ticchio, both of whom are members of Mahwah Boy Scout Troop 258, recently achieved Eagle Scout status. Howard is the son of David and Ellen Howard of Mahwah. His Eagle Court of Honor ceremony was held earlier this year at Camp Glen Gray. Howard began his Boy Scouting career in Europe as a Tiger Cub in 1999 with the BSA

Transatlantic Council, Troop 194 in Brussels, Belgium. When his family returned to Mahwah, Howard joined Pack 258 of the Northern New Jersey Council. In 2004, his family moved to McKinney, Texas, where he joined Troop 531 in the Circle 10 Council. In 2006, he again returned to Mahwah and resumed his activities with Troop 258. He developed his leadership skills as a bugler and senior patrol leader. As bugler,

he participated in numerous troop events and town ceremonies. Howard participated in numerous trail conservation projects on the Appalachian Trail in Harriman State Park. This included completing service hours as a Life Project to clean and grease 700 feet of cable used to move equipment and boulders for the stone work in the Bear Mountain section of the trail. He also led a Flag Retirement Ceremony at the Elks Lodge in Mahwah as part of his communications merit badge. The Elk’s Lodge 1941 in Mahwah is the Chartered Organization for Mahwah Troop 258. Howard visited the Floodwood Mountain Scout Reservation in New York in
2006 and 2010. He went to the BSA Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico in 2007 and to Florida Seabase in 2008 as a crew leader. His community service project was to rebuild a lean-to in the Gilwell Campsite at Camp Glen Gray. The project, which totaled 385 hours of combined personal planning and leadership and volunteer support, included removing the old floor, adding and replacing foundation and structural supports, installing a new floor and new siding, stripping off the old roof, replacing damaged roof boards, installing roof felt, drip edge and roof shingles, painting the exterior and interior, building a picnic (continued on page 27)
