December 14, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • Page 27 Mahwah Minutes Police hold Charity Toy Drive The Mahwah PBA Local 143 is joining with other police departments and PBA locals throughout Bergen County in collecting new, unopened toys to benefit military families, Sanzari’s Children’s Hospital, Tomorrow’s Children, Hackensack University Pediatric Center, Bergen County Head Start, Westside Infant and Teen Center, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, and New Hope. A collection box is located at the Mahwah Police Station, 221 Franklin Turnpike. The final day to drop off toys will be Sunday, Dec. 18. ‘Sound Doctrine’ to meet The Church of the Immaculate Conception Church in Mahwah will explore themes in the music of Advent and Christmas at the Dec. 15 “Sound Doctrine” meeting. The program will be held at 7:30 p.m. at The Mason Jar Restaurant, 219 Ramapo Valley Road in Mahwah. Board of health to meet The Mahwah Board of Health will meet on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Mahwah Municipal Building located at 475 Corporate Drive. Blood Drive scheduled The Mahwah Community Blood Drive and Community Blood Services will hold a Blood Drive to help ensure that the transfusion needs of area patients are met. The drive will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon at Capacity Group, 1 International Boulevard. To schedule an appointment, call Community Blood Services at (201) 251-3703. All types of blood are needed especially types O- and O+. Any healthy individual age 17 through 75 and weighing at least 110 pounds can donate blood. Donors should eat a moderate meal before donating and must bring identification showing signature. All donors receive a complimentary cholesterol screening with every blood donation. Christmas services announced Ramapo Reformed Church, located at 100 Island Road in Mahwah, has announced special Advent and Christmas programs in addition to the regular services on Sundays at 10 a.m. On Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, candlelight services will be held at 7 and 11 p.m. The earlier service is informal and geared toward families. Both services feature traditional lessons and carols. Sunday school for children age three through grade six and a nursery are provided during worship each Sunday, including Christmas Day. Holiday programs planned The Mahwah Public Library, located at 100 Ridge Road, has planned several programs for the holiday season. These programs are free and no tickets are necessary. Seats will be available on a “first come” basis. On Dec. 18, “The Polar Express 3D” will be shown at 2 p.m. The Chris Van Allsburg’s popular children’s book became a modern movie classic. The story opens on Christmas Eve when Hero Boy is suddenly awakened by a steam train outside his window. The train is leaving for the Mahwah PBA Local 143 recently presented a donation to the Mahwah Marine Moms/North Jersey Military Moms to assist them with their vital work of shipping care packages to men and women serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. North Pole and Hero Boy, encouraged by a kindly conductor, joins the passengers on their journey to meet Santa. Three-D glasses, popcorn, movie snacks, and beverages will be provided. Troop 258 Eagle Scouts (continued from page 7) table, installing a heavy duty metal grill at the camp site and demolition, and removal of an old sign board. With the successful completion of his service project, 33 merit badges, and all other requirements, he became an Eagle Scout on Sept. 27, 2010 in the year the Boy Scouts of America celebrated 100 years of Scouting. He also went on to earn both Bronze and Gold Eagle Palms. While in Mahwah High School, Howard was a member of the Marching Thunderbird Band, Concert Band, and Jazz Band. In June 2011, he graduated from Mahwah High and went on to attend William Paterson University. He is a chemistry major and received a Trustee Scholarship awarded to high-achieving high school students for academic accomplishments, high school record, and SAT. Ticchio, 17, started his Scouting experience in September 2000 as a Tiger Cub. He attended multiple years of BSA summer camps and trips and earned a total of 22 merit badges en-route to his Eagle achievement. His Eagle project was to design, plan, and organize the construction of a memorial for deceased police officers. The memorial is located in the corner of the Mahwah Police Department parking lot. Ticchio is a senior at Mahwah High School, where he is senior class president. He is president of the Young Politicians Club and the Model United Nations Club and is a member of the National Honor Society. His interested include politics and finance. He is currently applying to colleges and plans to major in pre-law. Ticchio and Howard have joined an elite group of young men who have earned the Eagle rank. The first Eagle was awarded in 1912 and less than four percent of Boy Scouts ever achieve this honor. This elite brotherhood includes many famous people from astronauts to presidents, business leaders to military generals. The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation’s largest and most prominent values-based organizations. Its programs are designed to build character and leadership capabilities, teach principles of active citizenship, and encourage personal fitness.
