Early snowstorm (continued from page 9) spring break by “buying back” two days at the end of the school year. Shada advised that, in the event that the extra days are not needed for snow days this winter, the extra days will be given back around the Memorial Day weekend. She explained that the calendar can be changed now because the annual high school gala has not yet been scheduled. “We’re trying to be pro-active and save the spring break,” she added. According to the calendar, education law requires a minimum of 180 student school days and this calendar allows for six snow days. If additional snow days are needed, it may be necessary to conduct school during spring break, which is set for the week of April 2 through 9. The district would start with conducting school on Monday, April 9 and work backward. The school board promised to make every effort to maintain the full week for spring recess without compromising the safety of the students and staff. According to this new calendar, the Mahwah schools will be closed from Dec. 26 to 30 for the holiday recess; Jan. 16 for Martin Luther King Day; Feb. 20 and 21 for the Presidents’ Day holiday; April 2 through 9 for spring recess and Good Friday; and May 28 for Memorial Day.
