In November 2008, Allison Jackson of Mahwah ran the Philadelphia Marathon for Cure International, a charity dedicated to eradicating the birth defect “club foot,” since Jackson had suffered a severe case when she was born. This November, she will again run 26.2 miles in the New York Marathon as part of Fred’s Team, a cancer research fundraising

group. Since 1995, Fred’s Team has raised $42 million for the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center through events such as the New York Marathon. “Cancer has impacted so many of my family members and friends. Most recently, my mother-in-law courageously fought breast cancer throughout this year. I want to honor her and everyone who has battled any form of cancer,” said Jackson, who is among several hundred runners bearing the signature orange Fred’s Team jersey. Jackson, mother of two and communications manager at Hertz Corporation, needs to raise $3,500 with Fred’s Team to qualify for the marathon. As of Aug. 11, she had raised $1,255, or 35 percent of her goal. “Any donation helps, and brings us one step closer to a world without cancer. When you make a donation, e-mail me the name of someone who has battled cancer who you would like to honor. I will proudly wear their name on my racing jersey. I’m running for all those men, women, and children who have valiantly fought this devastating disease.” Businesses donating $1,000 or more can also have their logo prominently displayed on Jackson’s running gear, offering exposure to the nearly 35,000 New York Marathon runners, 12,000 volunteers, and two million spectators. The easiest way to donate is to go to the www.fredsteam.org website and click on “Donate Now” and type in Allison Jackson’s name. Donors may also fill out a written form and donate by check. ‘Triangle Shirtwaist Fire’ to be discussed
Tom Ainsworth will present “The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire -- March 25, 1911: The Fire that Awoke a Nation” on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Mahwah Public Library. The Triangle Shirtwaist Company, which occupied the top three floors of a 10-story building in New York City, was consumed by fire. All told, 147 people, mostly women and young girls working in sweatshop conditions, lost their lives. As
photos of the dead girls hit newspapers’ front pages across the nation, the public outcry became enormous. This disaster led to sweeping safety laws and regulations that remain in effect today. This program is free. Tickets and registration are not required. Seats are on a “first come” basis. Call (201) 529-READ or visit the website at http://mahwah.bccls.org/ for program information. The Mahwah Public Library is located at 100 Ridge Road.
