Mahwah Minutes
Chamber plans networking event The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce will hold a business card exchange for members and non-members on Aug. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is being hosted by Morgan Stanley Smith Barney at 1200 East Ridgewood Avenue in Ridgewood. Refreshments will be available. The cost is $15 for Chamber members and $30 for nonmembers. Prepaid registration is required to guarantee participation; an additional $5 processing fee will be charged if paid the day of event. To register, visit mahwah.com or call the Chamber office at (201) 529-5566. Russo novel to be discussed Not by Bread Alone, a spiritual book discussion group, will meet on Aug. 28 at 5 p.m. at Panera Bread, 1300 State Route 17 in Ramsey. This month’s selection is the 2002 Pulitzer Prize winner “Empire Falls” by Richard Russo. Russo delves deep into the blue-collar heart of America in a work that overflows with hilarity, heartache, and grace. Protagonist Miles Roby has been slinging burgers at the Empire Grill for 20 years, a job that cost him his college education and much of his self-respect. What keeps him there? It could be his bright, sensitive daughter Tick, who needs all his help surviving the local high school. Maybe it’s Janine, Miles’ soon-to-be ex-wife, who has taken up with a noxiously vain health-club proprietor. Perhaps it’s the imperious Francine Whiting, who owns everything in town and seems to believe “everything” includes Miles. This discussion group is sponsored by the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Mahwah. For more information, contact Jennifer Edwards at (201) 327-1276 or paicc@yahoo.com. ‘Remembering Les Paul’ concert set Lou Pallo and Bucky Pizzarelli will perform “Remembering Les Paul,” a benefit concert on Saturday, Sept. 24. This event will be held at 8 p.m. at the Sharp Theater of the Berrie Center at Ramapo College in Mahwah. Pizzarelli and Paul were long-time friends and played together in local clubs in the 1960s and 1970s. Pallo joined Paul at Fat Tuesdays and later at the Iridium as part of the Les Paul Trio. All proceeds from this concert will benefit the Mahwah Museum, which will open its Les Paul exhibit on Sept. 25. The exhibit, a celebration of Paul’s genius, will feature graphic presentations of his life, artifacts from his home in Mahwah including some rare and valuable guitars, handson exhibits about Paul’s inventions, and more. Tickets are $30, $27, and $24. To order tickets, visit www.ramapo.edu/berriecenter/events/or call (201) 6847844 or at the Berrie Center box office. Ramapo College is located to 505 Ramapo Valley Road in Mahwah. The club will be facilitated by Mahwah resident Carolyn Epstein, a teacher at Saint Thomas Aquinas College’s English/writing department, and Rich Thielker, who taught film and literature and the history of film at Pascack Valley High School and at Pascack Valley Community School.
