The custom-made showcase displaying memorabilia from baseball legend Johnny Vander Meer will be moved in the near future to a more prominent location within the Midland Park Memorial Library. The recently-renovated library now has an area behind the circulation desk where the museum will be much more visible to library patrons and visitors, according to Library Director Melissa Hughes. Cincinnati uniform, balls and plaques, was donated by Vander Meer to the town in 1996. Residents raised the funds for the display case, crafted by life-long resident Frank Nydam. Vander Meer, who grew up in Midland Park and began his career with the Midland Park Rangers, became the only pitcher in major league history to throw backto-back no-hitters while pitching for the Cincinnati Reds in 1938, a record which has never been broken. He shut out the Boston Braves on June 11, and repeated that
performance against the Brooklyn Dodgers on June 15. More than 1,000 Midland Park fans and former semi-pro teammates attended that sold-out game at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. He was 23 years old. Throughout his career, he pitched in five all-star games, led the National League in strikeouts three straight years and helped Cincinnati to two pennants. He was inducted into the New Jersey Sports Hall of Fame and the Bergen County Hall of Fame. He died in 1997 at the age of 83.
