The Mahwah Health Department recently confirmed that an ill-appearing raccoon, located in the vicinity of Island Road, was rabid. Rabid animals may be aggressive, vicious, appear ill, or have difficulty walking. They may also exhibit “friendly” behavior, approaching humans or domestic animals without fear. Individuals who witness this type of behavior in a wild animal are advised to stay away from that animal and contact the Mahwah Police Department at (201) 529-1000. Only mammals (including humans) can contract rabies. Left untreated, it is always fatal.
