Senior events include talk by Dressler Bergen County Surrogate Michael Dressler will address the Ramsey Seniors at the group’s May 10 luncheon, which will be held at noon at the Finch Park Center. Dressler will discuss the importance of knowing your legal rights. Sign up at borough hall. Seating is limited. A light lunch will be provided by ShopRite. Signup for the May 25 trip to the Thimble Islands will begin Tuesday, May 3 at 10 a.m. at borough hall. Located in and around the harbor of Stony Creek in the southeast corner of Branford, Connecticut, the islands are pink granite bedrock, and were the tops of hills prior to the last Ice Age. Accessible only by boat, many have homes built on them. After a boat ride through Long Island Sound, there will be a lunch at the USS Chowder Pot II and a visit to the Trolley Museum for a trolley ride. The cost for this day trip is $50 per person. Checks may be made payable to the Borough of Ramsey. The bus will depart Finch Park at 7:45 a.m. and will return at approximately 7 p.m. Space is limited to 49 persons. The seniors will hold an Open House on Thursday, May 12 at 1 p.m. at the center in Finch Park. Attendees will meet Master Peng who will present new “seniorized” tai chi information. Green tea and refreshments will be served. AARP will host a driving course on May 20 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the center in Finch Park. New Jersey law limits class size to 25 participants, who will be chosen by lottery. Registration has begun at borough hall. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Attendees should bring a valid New Jersey license, lunch, and a beverage. New Jersey drivers who take the course qualify for an automobile insurance premium discount. Spring bocce for women will begin May 5 at 1 p.m. The Bocce Boys are also planning an early May start for their season. Stop by the senior center for more information. Car Show participants sought Ramsey High School’s auto shop will host its first Car Show on Saturday, May 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Rain date: May 22.) Owners of antique cars and trucks are invited to participate in the event, which will be held on the front lawn of the high school. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. The $5 entrance fee will include a goodie bag. Judging will begin at 1 p.m. Trophies in various categories will be presented at 3 p.m. A designated area to park trailers will be available.
The event will include food, music, and free admission for spectators. Proceeds from the event will benefit the auto shop program at Ramsey High School, one of the last high schools in the area to offer auto shop as part of the curriculum. For more information, contact rhscarshow@gmail.com. Girl Scout holds Baby Basics drive Andrea Felice, an eighth grader at Eric S. Smith Middle School in Ramsey and a Cadet Girl Scout with Ramsey Troop 569, is collecting diapers for local needy mothers and their families in conjunction with the Children’s Aid and Family Services in Paramus for her Silver Award Project. Felice has placed diaper donation boxes at the Ramsey Borough Hall, the Ramsey Police Station, and the Ramsey Post Office. She also has donation boxes in each of Ramsey’s five schools and in a few local churches. Urgently needed are diapers in sizes 3, 4, 5 and 6. She plans to deliver the donations by Mother’s Day, May 8. Children’s Aid and Family Services is a nonprofit organization that has been helping needy, low-income families in Bergen County for the last 110 years. Their Baby Basics program provides well over 14,000 diapers a month to 112 local families. Club hosts Annual Plant Sale The Ramsey Area Garden Club will hold its Annual Plant Sale on May 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ramsey Train Station located just off Main Street. A large variety of annuals and perennials from professional growers and club members will be available. Also featured will be hanging baskets, houseplants, and Mother’s Day gift baskets. All proceeds benefit the club’s horticultural and educational programs. Call Joan Tommaney at (201) 327-8968. ‘Race to Know Where’ set The Ramsey Public Education Foundation and the Ramsey PTO officers will sponsor a showing of “Race to Know Where” on Tuesday, April 26 at 7 p.m. in the Ramsey High School auditorium. In this highly acclaimed documentary, a mother turned filmmaker aims her camera at the high-stakes, high-pressure culture that has invaded
schools and children’s lives. The film features heartbreaking stories of young people in all types of communities, educators who are burned out, and parents who are trying to do what’s best for their kids. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door for $15. ‘Relay’ team holds benefit breakfast The Relay for Life Team known as the Purple Kobras will sponsor an all-you-can-eat breakfast on Sunday, May 1 from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Island Avenue firehouse in Ramsey. Tickets are $5 per person. The breakfast will include pancakes, French toast, sausage, coffee, tea, and juice. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. Foundation plans Spring Dinner Dance The Ramsey Public Education Foundation host a Spring Dinner Dance at The Knights of Columbus in Ramsey on Saturday, April 30 from 7 to 11 p.m. The event will feature a buffet dinner and drinks, music, an auction, cash prize contest, and prizes. Proceeds will support enrichment programs and technology at the public schools. Tickets for the event are $65 per person. Exhibit commemorates Armenian Massacre The First Presbyterian Church in Ramsey will present an art exhibit to commemorate the 95th Anniversary of the Armenian Massacre. The exhibit will be open on Wednesday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the chapel. The Rev. Greg Keosaian, stated clerk of the Presbytery of the Palisades, will lead a presentation and discussion of the events of the Armenian Holocaust. Armenian artist and Presbyterian elder, Lucy Janjigian, will display several paintings from her collection, “Uprooted,” which depicts events of the Armenian Holocaust. DVDs of a narrated exhibit of the “Uprooted” collection will be available for sale. Refreshments will be provided. First Presbyterian Church is located at 15 Shuart Lane.
