Greene succeeds Bristow as township historian
by Frank J. McMahon Carol W. Greene of the Sun Valley Farm on Ramapo Valley Road has been appointed as Mahwah’s historian. The township council acknowledged her appointment by former Mahwah Mayor Richard Martel at a recent public meeting. Greene will fill out the unexpired term of the late John Bristow, who was the township historian for many years. Bristow’s unexpired term extends to June 30. As the township’s historian, Greene will serve without compensation and will be the definitive resource for historical accuracy concerning the history of the township. She will be the person to whom historical documents are submitted for the township’s archives, and she will be the guardian of those archives, according to Barbara Shanley, the chair of the Mahwah Historic Preservation Commission. A lifetime resident of Mahwah, Greene graduated from Ramsey High school in 1959 and received a bachelor’s degree in English literature from the American University in Washington DC in 1963. She is a New Jersey/New York licensed real estate broker, property manager, and investor with 45 years of experience, and she has been a certified real estate appraiser for 20 years. As a historic preservationist and regional historian for more than 25 years, she has served for many years on the Mahwah Historic Preservation Commission and on the Bergen County Historic Preservation Advisory Board. She has also been a trustee and chair of the New Jersey Historic Tract Restoration Grant Program. Greene served for 10 years as trustee and chair of the New Jersey Historic Trust, a bricks and mortar grant program, and was a longtime member of the Bergen County Historic Preservation Advisory Board. Currently, she is vice president of W3R-NJ, an organization dedicated to the commemoration and preservation of the 600-mile, nine-state route of the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary War march of 1781. Greene is also president of the Friends of the Hermitage, Inc., which operates the National Landmark Museum and History Education Center in Ho-HoKus. A co-founder of the Mahwah Museum Society, Greene serves on the township’s Historic Preservation Commission and its Beautification Committee. As a member of the Historic Preservation Commission, Greene helps safeguard the community’s architectural, archaeological, scenic, and cultural heritage by preserving, protecting, and conserving historical sites, structures, objects, roads, and cemeteries. The 11-member board is appointed by the mayor and is responsible for preparing and maintaining a survey of more than 300 historical sites, recommending the designation of historical sites to the township council, and reviewing permit applications for designated structures. In 2007, the Bergen County Historic Preservation Advisory Board awarded Greene the Claire Tholl Lifetime Achievement Award in Historic Preservation. In 2010, she received a New Jersey Histori-
cal Commission Award of Recognition for her contributions to state history, including her recent publication of “The Ramapough Chronicles: A 300-Year History of Mahwah, New Jersey and its Surrounds.” The book also received a Bergen County award for historic preservation education. From time to time, Greene puts on Victorian fashion shows with her daughter, Lindsey Barrett, showing how clothing reflected the times. She also creates museum displays. Greene and her husband, Richard, preserved the family-owned Sun Valley Farm in Mahwah as New Jersey Preserved Farmland. The historical dairy farm, which dates back to the 1860s, was the first and largest farm in Bergen County to be preserved in the state’s farmland preservation program.
