Officials consider placing cell towers on borough land
Ramsey officials are currently considering a move to locate cell towers on borough property – a decision that could negate the need for towers now proposed at private locations in town. Last week, a borough official confirmed that there are two existing cell tower applications before the board of adjustment. Those applications concern privately-owned properties on Grove Street and Mechanic Street. The official said the borough-owned properties being considered for cell tower installations include a property on Darlington Avenue at the borough’s pump site near a local cemetery and the department of public works site near the borough’s train station. If the borough opts to go to bid using the two borough-owned sites, the official said the two current applications could be withdrawn. In particular, if the plans for the Darlington Avenue location come to fruition, the pending Grove Street tower application could be withdrawn. The Grove Street site is owned by Andrew Siemsen, the former council president who resigned last summer, citing family reasons. T-Mobile has submitted an application to install a 100-foot tree-type tower at the Grove Street site. Several residents who attended the borough’s recent informational session on the tower proposals expressed concerns about the impact of the towers on local property values, aesthetics, and the former councilman’s interest in the Grove Street site. Ramsey officials have noted that, if a cell tower is constructed on a borough-owned property, the municipality can exercise some control as to how the tower looks. Cell towers located on borough land would also produce significant revenue for the town. At press time, no firm decisions had been made regarding the use of borough land for this purpose. Local officials are still deciding on the process. However, if specifications are developed, bids could be accepted in the summer, a source said.
