Chuck Jandris named to unexpired council seat
by Frank J. McMahon The Mahwah Council has appointed Chuck Jandris to fill the unexpired term on the township’s governing body. Jandris, who lives on Stone Fence Road, is currently a member of the township’s planning board and captain of Mahwah Ambulance Company 4. He was appointed by a 5-1 vote, with Council Members Lisa DiGiulio, Roy Larson, John Spiech, Harry Williams, and John Roth voting for the appointment and Councilman Samuel Alderisio voting against his appointment. The oath of office was administered by Township Attorney Terry Bottinelli, and Jandris addressed those members of the public who were still at the meeting at about 12:30 a.m., saying he knew they were “not thrilled” as they were leaving the session regarding the Crossroads rezoning. He added, “I am an EMT (emergency medical technician) in town, and I care a lot for people. If I can make a difference on the council, I sure will try.” Jandris will take the seat of John DaPuzzo, who was appointed mayor by his peers on the council after the recent death of former Mayor Richard Martel. Jandris will remain in that post until a special election is held in November to elect a council member to serve out the balance of DaPuzzo’s term, which expires at the end of 2014. The unexpired term of mayor will also be up for election in November, and DaPuzzo will have to seek reelection at that time to serve out the balance of Martel’s unexpired term, which will expire at the end of 2012. Jandris submitted a letter in interest to the council along with six other candidates. Three were nominated in writing by other council members. In his letter, Jandris stated he was a great admirer and supporter of former Mayor Martel, whom he described as a friend. Jandris noted that he was recently elected as captain of Mahwah Ambulance Company 4 and he then realized that he is “the caregiver” for the territory from the Fardale section of the township north to Macarthur Boulevard and is responsible for getting an ambulance and qualified crew to the medical aid of township residents, shoppers, and people who are employed in Mahwah or are simply passing through. Jandris described that as “a daunting call to duty for most, but quite the honorable one for myself.” He told the council he would also be honored to share his knowledge, experience, and strong family values and “help move the council forward in a respectable and positive manner.”
He added, “I currently own and operate a business in town, love living in town, and care for my friends and neighbors. I embrace the future of our great town and hope to be part of the township council.” Jandris received a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Beaver College in Glenside, Pennsylvania in June 1987. He owns and operates the Children’s Learning Center on Leighton Place, where he has been the director of finance since 1990. His responsibilities there include all financial operations and the daily operation of the school, including transportation safety and coordination, event organization, first aid and CPR, and website creation and maintenance.
