Proposed school budget would decrease taxes
by Frank J. McMahon The Mahwah K-12 School District recently unveiled a total budget of $59,397,470 that will result in a decrease in the average school related property tax. The new average assessed value of a home in Mahwah as a result of the recent revaluation, and as confirmed by Township Administrator Brian Campion and Tax Assessor Stuart Stolarz, is $470,000, and the tax levy needed to support the school budget will result in a 0.962 cent tax rate for the school district, according to School Business Administrator Edward Deptula. That tax rate, when compared to the school district’s previous rate of $1.298 and the previous average assessed value of $358,200 will reduce the school related property tax on that property by $128 per year. Each homeowner can determine his or her individual school related tax by multiplying the new 0.962 cent tax rate by the new assessed value of his or her own property in hundreds of dollars. The 2011 school budget contains $55,820,681in current expenses, $835,000 in special revenue, and $2,741,789 in debt service. The budget is $1,206,837 or two percent more than the $58,205,633 budget that was presented to the public last year and which was defeated by the township’s voters. The school district received an additional $554,386 in state aid this year, however, and Deptula explained that the budget benefited from the fact that the cost of health benefits for employees increased by 8.5 percent instead of
the previously expected 22 percent increase previously predicted by the state. He said it also benefited from the 1.5 percent that school district employees must now contribute to their health benefits, and the new rules that forbid dual health insurance coverage of employees and their spouses. Deptula also pointed out that the budget contains $384,000 for building maintenance this year versus $674,000 in last year’s budget, and boiler replacements have lowered heating costs. In addition, Deptula emphasized that the budget will result in no planned reduction in staff. The budget uses $1,220,386 of the school district’s surplus, $1,289,749 in state aid, and 969,471 in federal aid. (continued on page 14)
