at the next meeting of “Sound Doctrine” on Thursday, April 7 at 8 p.m. at the Lakeside Inn at the Ramsey Golf and Country Club, 105 Lakeside Drive in Ramsey. Elks host Pasta Night The Mahwah Elks, 1 Foxwood Lane in Mahwah, will host an All You Can Eat Pasta Night on Friday, April 8 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The cost of this event is $8 for seniors, $9 for adults, and $5 for children ages six through 12. Children under five years old will be admitted free. The buffet dinner will include homemade pasta with meatballs and sausage, white clam sauce for the Lenten season, salad, bread, soda and wine, coffee, and dessert. Museum trip for seniors offered The Mahwah Senior Center will sponsor a trip to The Emperor’s Private Paradise at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Tuesday, April 5. The excursion will include transportation by deluxe motor coach,
admission into the exhibit, a guided tour of both the Met and the Cloisters, and lunch at Carmine’s on 91st Street. The cost for the day is $67. The loan exhibition, organized by the Peabody Essex Museum, presents 90 paintings, decorative works, architectural elements, and religious works created for an elaborate two-acre private retreat built deep within the Forbidden City in 1771 as the retirement residence of one of China’s most extravagant monarchs, the Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736–95), who presided over China’s last dynasty, the Qing, at the zenith of its power and wealth. Merton memoir to be discussed Not by Bread Alone, a spiritual book discussion group, will meet Sunday, May 22 at 5 p.m. at Panera Bread, 1300 Route 17 in Ramsey. This month’s selection is “The Seven Storey Mountain: An Autobiography of Faith” by Thomas Merton. In 1941, Merton, a brilliant, handsome young man decided to give up a promising literary career in New York to enter a monastery in Kentucky. He proceeded to become one of the most influential writers of this century. Now considered a classic, “The Seven Storey Mountain,” describes his early doubts, his conversion, and his decision to take life vows as a Trappist monk. Free tax program available AARP Tax-Aide, the nation’s larg-
est free, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service, will be available to taxpayers with low- and middle-income with special attention to those who are age 60 and older. Those seeking assistance should call to make an appointment and should bring previous tax returns, and information about their 2010 earnings including pensions, Form 1099’s, Social Security, and other supporting forms that apply. All homeowners and tenants must complete a New Jersey return, irrespective of their taxable income, if they wish to apply for the Fair Rebate. The ability to file most tax returns electronically will be available this year.
