Budget (continued from page 9) The tax levy the voters will be asked to approve this year to fund this budget is $52,861,361 plus $2,721,403 in previously approved debt service totaling $55,582,764, which represents an increase of 1.66 percent over last year’s total tax levy. The school board and administration voiced their satisfaction with the budget. Patricia Shada, the president of the board said, “This is a budget I am proud to go to the public with.” Trustee John Dolan thanked Deptula for his work on the budget and, referring to the budget, he said, “Our children will continue to be educated in the manner we have come to expect without any reduction in services.” Superintendent Charles Montesano noted that the school district’s budget was defeated last year. He cautioned that if this budget were defeated co-curricular programs would be negatively impacted. Shada pointed out that when last year’s budget was defeated middle school sports were eliminated. Last year, the tax levy required for the school district’s budget was defeated when 20.4 percent of the registered voters went to the polls and 10 of the 14 voting districts in the township voted against the tax levy. That tax levy represented a four percent increase. As a result, the annual property tax increase on a Mahwah home with the average assessed value of $358,230 at that time would have been $168 annually. The township council then recommended, and the Mahwah Board of Education accepted, a $250,000 reduction from salaries in the budget which Deptula said the district could absorb because there were more retirements than normal after the budget was set, and the differential between retirement and entry level replacement salaries would allow the district to provide enough money to add some staff, particularly at the high school, and absorb the $250,000 budget cut. WE DO WEBER GRILL REPAIRS Propane Filled 7 Days A Week • Best Prices • Friendly, Helpful, Knowledgeable Staff • Full Line Of Accessories & Replacement Parts • On Premises Propane Fill Station, Year-Round • We Are The Area’s WEBER Warranty Servicing Dealer 27 Franklin Turnpike • Waldwick 201-652-5666 www.homehardwaresupply.com MAJOR CREDIT CARDS ACCEPTED FREE Propane Fill-Up with purchase of assembled grill of $399 or more (Tank sold separately) With coupon only.
