The Newcomers Club, a social organization whose purpose is to assist new residents of Saddle River and Upper Saddle River in becoming acquainted with their neighbors and communities, organizes outings and activities throughout the year. Plans for the upcoming year include a winery tour, a trip to New York for a Chocolate Tour, and a trip to the Culinary Institute of America. Woman’s Club welcomes new members The Woman’s Club of Upper Saddle River invites women over age 40 to become involved in the community through the club’s community outreach fundraisers and social events. The club holds an annual baby shower for Shelter Our Sisters, sponsors a writing contest in the public schools, presents awards to outstanding students at Cavallini School and Northern Highlands Regional High School, and supports the Highlands Scholarship Foundation. Private tour of MoMA offered The Upper Saddle River Library will offer a 90-minute private guided tour of the Museum of Modern Art on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. with local artist and teacher Bart D’Andrea. Community invited to iWalk for Arya Support childhood cancer research on Oct. 2 at the Second Annual iWalk for Arya. This walkathon, which is being held in memory of Arya Majumder of Upper Saddle River, will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. at Lions Park in Upper Saddle River. The community is invited to join this childfriendly event at which participants walk in the park, listen to music, and take part in a host of activities. This year’s fundraising goal is $75,000. The iWalk event is the Arya’s Kids Foundation to Fight Childhood Cancer’s primary fundraising event and is designed to bring together those in the community who were positively influenced by Arya. Those who are unable to participate are welcome to make a donation to support the foundation’s 2011 initiatives. The Arya’s Kids Foundation was created last year by Arya’s parents, Kumud and Swati Majumder, as a tribute to their son, who lost his battle with cancer in April 2010. Prostate cancer support group to meet LifeLines, a supportive, informative resource for prostate cancer patients and their partners in Northern Bergen County, will meet on Sept. 28 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Church of the Presentation, 271 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. The group was formed by prostate cancer patients to share information and experience about available treatment and service resources. Meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of the month. For details, e-mail lifelines@optonline.net. Harvest Festival set at Hopper-Goetschius House Fall is here, the crops are in, and there’s work to be done to get ready for winter. In early, America fall was also a time to be joyful. Take time to celebrate the “bounty of the harvest” on Sunday, Oct. 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Hopper-Goetschius House Museum’s Annual Harvest Festival. The event is free to members. There is a nominal charge for non-members. Young people 16 and under will be admitted free. The event will feature a variety of activities for children and adults. The petting zoo will include goats, lambs, donkeys, ducks, chickens, and rabbits. Pony rides will also be offered. There will also be demonstrations of colonial crafts, including spinning, chair caning, wood carving, quilting, bobbin lacemaking, and rug braiding. Watch the cider pressing in the old Dutch barn and enjoy a taste of fresh cider. Taste one of yesteryear’s recipes cooked over the open hearth fire in the out kitchen. There will be grilled hot dogs and soda to purchase. This year, there will be a special area featuring several antiques and crafts deal- ers and artists. Auxiliary hosts Beefsteak Dinner The Ladies Auxiliary of the Upper Saddle River Volunteer Fire Department will host a Beefsteak Dinner on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. The “All You Can Eat Beefsteak Dinner” will be held at the firehouse on West Saddle River Road. Beer and soda will be included. Attendees are invited to bring their own beverages. The event will include a cash prize and other prizes. Tickets are $35 per person and must be purchased in advance.
