Page 10 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • September 28, 2011 Waldwick The parking lot that services the ambulance corps building/senior center/health center behind Fire Company No. 2 in Waldwick may soon be getting much needed improvements. The borough council is applying for a Community Development grant of $40,000 to fund at least part of the project. Funds not provided by the grant would come from the borough’s capital improvement fund, Borough Administrator Gary Kratz recommended. The borough engineer estimates the entire reconstruction project will run about $120,000. The improvements qualify for the grant because they are for a senior citizen project. The other qualifiers would be handicapped accessibility or work in a low-income sector, according to Councilwoman Anita Bozzo. The lot, which has 38 spaces, needs drainage work and repaving, according to Kratz. He said that the dry wells installed a few years ago to drain the lot have been sinking and a sink hole has developed. He added that this time around he hopes to be able to connect to the storm drains on Wyckoff Avenue. He explained that when Borough will seek grant Molnar is national champ for senior parking lot work the original drainage was done, the county would not allow the connection. Former Mayor Frank McKenna, present at the meeting, said that one of the reasons given at that time was that the drain on Wyckoff Avenue was not large enough to handle the additional flow. “Well, the lot overflows and the water lands there anyway, but logic didn’t come into it,” he noted. “There are new people in charge now,” Kratz said. “The parking lot does need attention. It used to be that you could only go on the perimeter of the lot. It’s better now, and it is used mainly by seniors,” said Public Health Nurse Carol Shepard. Senior citizens avail themselves of health services at the health center regularly, and their meeting room is above the ambulance building. Councilman Thomas Giordano, who is also the president of the fire department, asked if replacing the firehouse apron and wooden guardrail could also be part of the project. Kratz said those improvements would not qualify for grant funds but could certainly be done at the same time and paid for with borough moneys.
