Allendale Community is principal Festival Day sponsor
The Allendale Community for Mature Living is again serving as the principal sponsor for Allendale Festival Day and Car Show, sponsored by the Allendale Chamber of Commerce. The 19th annual event along West Allendale Avenue is scheduled this year for Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “Our member sponsors are what have allowed us to continue making the Festival Day & Car Show bigger and better every year, and to keep the cost to the community to a minimum,” said Festival Day Chairman Dan Zettler. “This year, The Allendale Community for Mature Living graciously stepped forward as our Exclusive Diamond Sponsor, is giving us the use of their shuttle bus for the day to offer free parking at Crestwood Lake, organizing the pet parade and providing a prize for every entrant,” Zettler said. Allendale Community is also offering free games and activities, including Mr. Scarecrow Bean Bag Toss, Pitch a Penny in a Basket, Pumpkin Ring Toss/ Large & Small, Face Painting & Glitter Tattoos with Stephanie, Free Raffle Baskets and Guess How Many Candy / Prize Jar.” The Allendale Community for Mature Living in Bergen County is a leading continuum-of-care community, comprised of three separate residences: The Atrium for residential living, Carlton Court for assisted living and The Allendale Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center. Founded by Dr. Hector Giancarlo more than 40 years ago, the community provides a better way for seniors to live happy, selfdirected lives in a caring supportive environment sensitive to every need. Zettler also expressed appreciation to the Platinum Sponsors, Theodora’s Gracious Gifts and Designs and TD Bank, NA. “Thanks to these and our other sponsors, we will be offering ‘All access for $5’ for all chamber-sponsored rides: a 75-foot obstacle course, bounce house, petting zoo, and new this year, a pony ride from 12-3 p.m.,” he added. The festival features music, entertainment and food from local restaurants throughout the day. Other popular children’s attractions include a petting zoo, rides and games, an obstacle course and clowns and balloons. Also new is a blessing of the pets, to be conducted by Father Michael of Trinity Episcopal Church following the pet parade, which is set to begin at 11 a.m.. The Car Show, held in the commuter parking lot beyond the clock tower at the end of Allendale Avenue, features antique and classic cars and accessory vendors. The chamber is looking for talented entertainers willing to perform during the annual event. All age groups are welcome. Crafters and antique cars are also being sought, with pre-registration encouraged. Students gather books for urban schools
Three students from Northern Highlands High School’s National Honor Society encouraged their peers and parents to help collect books for a newly opened charter school in Manhattan. “We have collected around 3,500 books this year, and there are still more coming in daily,” said Anuj Chhabra, an Allendale resident and member of the National Honor Society at Northern Highlands. “Our goal is 10,000 books by the end of the year.” The books are being delivered to the KIPP Star Elementary School in Washington Heights, which Chhabra describes as a charter school that tends to attract bright and motivated students. The KIPP school, however, has very few books for the school library, and that’s where Chhabra and his student colleagues, James Bryan and Nisha Chojar, stepped in. With the help of other students and library staff from Ho-Ho-Kus and Glen Rock, their effort is well under way. Last year, the Northern Highlands National Honor Society collected 4,200 books for the KIPP School in Harlem and 1,000 more for PS 20 in Paterson. Books that are in good condition and suitable for elementary school students may be dropped off at the Hillside School in Allendale, the Ho-Kus-Kus Library, the Glen Rock Library, and the Hindu Samaj Temple in Mahwah.
