September 21, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 29 Allendale Notebook Church offers homemade pies for sale The Archer United Methodist Church will be selling fresh and frozen apple pies on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to noon and Sundays after the 10:30 a.m. service. For the past 29 years, the men, women, and children of Archer United Methodist Church have gathered on Tuesday mornings to make pies. Volunteers work as peelers, apple cutters, dough or spice mixers, “holy rollers,” or crust crimpers. More than 11,000 have been prepared (and eaten). Republicans plan social meeting The Allendale Republican Club will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. on the third floor of the Allendale Bar and Grill at 67 West Allendale Avenue. Fell House Friends welcome new members The Friends of the Fell House will meet on Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the historic home at 475 Franklin Turnpike. On the agenda will be a discussion of volunteer opportunities and recruitment plans. Events and programs will be presented and light refreshments will be served. Those interested in history, landscaping, education, the environment, public relations, marketing, or business are encouraged to attend. The Concerned Citizens of Allendale is the 501c3 nonprofit that owns and operates the Fell House and maintains the property. The group is dedicated to restoring and preserving this landmark while educating the public concerning its history. Board of education to meet The Allendale Board of Education will meet on Monday, Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. The session will be held in the library at Brookside School, 100 Brookside Avenue. Allendale is turning teal The Allendale Woman’s Club is turning the town teal during the month of September, which is National Ovarian Cancer Month. This campaign is an effort to promote awareness of the silent symptoms of ovarian cancer with the goal of earlier diagnosis and improved prognosis. The campaign was launched in 2007 and has more than 175 towns in eight states participating. As part of the campaign, the AWC has tied ribbons around town and has provided symptom cards and literature about ovarian cancer for local businesses to distribute to their patrons. Special teal nail polish and hair extensions are available salons in town as way to show support for this important effort to raise awareness of this disease. The main event of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in They’re the tops This past school year, Ms. Kristen Nicholas’s fifth grade class won a party after collecting the most box tops at Brookside School in Allendale. The next contest will continue through Tuesday, Oct. 25. The two classes (one from Hillside School and one from Brookside School) that collect the most box tops at each school will be treated to a party. For further information, visit www.btfe.com. Allendale is the Linda Fleischauer Memorial Walk, which is being held in honor of a beloved club member who lost her battle with ovarian cancer in May 2010. This 5K walk will take place on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 9 a.m. at Crestwood Lake. Sign in will begin at 8 a.m. at Crestwood Lake, with opening ceremonies set for 8:45 a.m. and step off at 9 a.m. Registration is $25 and early registration is encouraged. The first 150 registrants will receive a free T-shirt. Registration forms, pledge forms for additional donations, and more information are available at www.allendalewomansclub.org. Participants may also register on the day of the event. Sunday school classes resume Sunday school at Trinity Episcopal Church in Allendale will begin on Sept. 25 for children age three years old and up. Classes start at 10 a.m. during the Eucharist service. All children participate in hymn singing, gospel reading, Bible verses, and the Lord’s Prayer, after which they break into their age specific classes. Classes are held for children three through five, six through eight, nine through 11, and children age 12 and up. Oktoberfest to benefit Fell House The Concerned Citizens of Allendale will hold an Oktoberfest celebration on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. at The Red Barn at Crestwood Lake in Allendale. Tickets are $45 per person (adults only) and will include a traditional Oktoberfest meal catered by Allendale Bar & Grill, Oktoberfest beer donated by the Brooklyn Brewery, and DJ music. Global efforts showcased at celebration Trinity Episcopal Church will participate in Waldwick Day on Sept. 24 from noon to 5 p.m. at Borough Park off Hopper Avenue with a booth featuring a touchable Nets for Life display, a “Shoes for Souls” collection box and an interactive Noah’s Ark Trivia game. The church will also be handing out animal treats as an invitation to its Blessing of the Animals celebration set for Oct. 2. Nets for Life, is a grassroots effort to educate, engage and unite individuals in the fight against malaria. The program partnership includes companies, foundations, non-profits and non-governmental groups working to fight malaria. Donations of gently used children’s school and athletic shoes that will fit children from the ages of four through 12 will be collected at Trinity’s booth. Shoes for the orphaned children attending the Mustard Seed Academy will be taken to Uganda this fall by Real Partners Board member Kathryn Hiscock. Trinity also has a collection box outside the church on 55 George Street in Allendale.
