Walwick Mayor Russell “Buddy” Litchult attended his first council meeting last week following a freak accident on July 22 that left him homebound with a full cast on his leg. “It was very good to be back. It was my first day out,” said the mayor after the council’s Sept. 13 meeting. “I was sorry I missed the rededication of the 9/11 Memorial and the ribbon cutting for the Habitat for Humanity home,” he added. He explained that the workman’s compensation policy that covers his accident allows him attendance at mayor and council meetings, and no other functions. “I want to thank the council and the residents for their cards, their prayers, the flowers and the food I received. I really appreciated their thoughts,” he said. The mayor said he has therapy three times a week and can bend his leg 60 percent. Litchult was visiting the water tank construction site on Franklin Avenue in Wyckoff on July 22 along with other borough officials and professionals when he slipped and fell about two feet off the embankment, pulling tendons and muscles away from his left knee. He was operated on the following day and told his leg would be in a cast up to 12 weeks. He returns to the doctor on Oct. 4. “I’m looking forward to getting this cast off and walking normally,” he said.

The Waldwick Volunteer Fire Department unveiled its redesigned monument in front of Fire Company No. 2 on Wyckoff Avenue to commemorate the Tenth Anniversary of the terrorist attack on New York City and Washington, D.C. on Sept. 11 in a moving rededication ceremony attended by 200 residents. A new stone marker, landscaping and a knee wall were added to the memorial originally dedicated in 2002 featuring a steel beam from the World Trade Center towers. Funds for the project were raised by the Waldwick Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, headed by Marion Giordano. June Griffin, widow of 9/11 victim John Griffin, was present at the event along with dignitaries and representatives from area houses of worship. Inset: A close up of the inscription.
