Page 20 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • September 21, 2011 Waldwick Watch Register for Warrior Hoops Registration for the Waldwick Junior Warrior Hoops recreational basketball program will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 20 and Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Waldwick High School gym entrance. The Waldwick Junior Warrior Hoops offers 10 weeks of basketball instruction from December through March, an intramural program, and traveling teams that play competitive games against other towns. The boys’ intramural program, open to students in grades three through eight, aims to develop skills. The boys will play against other teams within the program. The Lil’ Warrior girls’ basketball program, an instructional program for players to develop skills and learn game situations, is open to girls in grades one through six. Girls in grades three through six will also play games. Competitive travel teams will hold tryouts in October. Participants must also be registered for Warrior Junior Hoops. Teams are determined by interest and skill levels. Travel teams are offered to boys in grades four through eight and to girls in grades three and four and five through eight. The fee for the Hoops program is $60. Travel teams will have an additional cost. For more information, call Sheila Serafin at (201) 888-0460. Girl Scout registration set All girls, beginning with those who will be entering kindergarten, are invited to be part of the Girl Scouting experience. Registration will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at the Waldwick Ambulance Corps Building, 20 Whites Lane, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The Girl Scout program provides fun, friendship, and enriching experiences through field trips, sports skillbuilding clinics, community service projects, cultural exchanges, and environmental stewardship programs. Girl Scouts builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Opportunities are available for adults interested in working with girls as a troop leader and assistant leader. For information, or to volunteer, call Denise Levitzke at (201) 670-8449 or Tara McCarty at (201) 445-4038. Flu vaccine available The Waldwick Board of Health will hold its annual Flu Vaccination Program on Thursday, Sept. 22 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Village School at 100 West Prospect Street. Individuals must be at least 18 years of age to receive a flu vaccine. As in past years, it will be necessary for those receiving Medicare Part B to bring their Medicare Part B card in order to receive the vaccine. The Waldwick Health Department, through a contract with Northwest Bergen Regional Health Commission, will directly bill Medicare. A $25 fee will be charged to those who do not have Medicare Part B. Anyone who has a Medicare HMO, also known as Medicare Advantage, may choose to go to his or her primary care provider or pay $25 for a flu vaccination. Medicare HMOs will not be accepted at the flu program. Annual vaccination against influenza is again recommended this year by the Centers for Disease Control for any adult who wants to reduce the risk of becoming ill with influenza or of transmitting it to others. Seasonal influenza is an easily transmittable respiratory disease. Each year, five to 20 percent of the U.S. population gets the flu. More than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications, including 20,000 children, and 36,000 people die every year. The most effective strategy for preventing influenza is annual vaccination. For more information regarding the seasonal flu, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website at http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/season/. Slide lecture to celebrate the Statue of Liberty The Statue of Liberty was dedicated 125 years ago, in October of 1886, after more than 20 years of planning, fundraising, and construction. In honor of the national monument’s 125th birthday, regional historian Kevin Woyce will present a slide lecture at the Waldwick Public Library on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. In his presentation, Woyce will explain how the statue was built, and what it symbolizes. He will also offer biographical information about those involved in its creation, including sculptor Frederic Bartholdi, engineer Gustave Eiffel, architect Richard Morris Hunt, and newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer. This program is free and open to the public; however, space is limited and advance registration is required. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick.
