Dredging White’s Pond in Waldwick will cost nearly $3.5 million, an updated engineering estimate has concluded. The mayor and council commissioned the study in August at the urging of Friends of White’s Pond, a community group intent on getting the 6.9 acre lake desilted. The group had contested as too high the previous $3 million cost estimates for the work and sought a current figure. Members said the borough could seek outside grants for the work so that the taxpayers would not be burdened with the cost. Borough Engineer Michael DeSena, who presented his

findings to the borough council last week, said his estimate was based on the soil mining figures generated when the pond was last dredged in 1974 and presumes that the soil will be free of contamination, as it was then. DeSena said the estimates are reliable for the present time because they are based on similar projects that where publicly bid recently. They break down as follows: Dredge and stockpile - $2,072,000 Trucking material off-site - $540,000 Disposal of dredged material - $740,000 Plan and specification preparation - $20,000 Construction observation and coordination - $20,000 State DEP permits - $30,000 Laboratory analysis - $30,000 Total Project Cost $3,452,000 DeSena said that approximately 74,000 cubic yards (continued on page 10)
The Waldwick Council has decided to proceed with efforts to stabilize the banks of the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook in the area of Dow Avenue and clean up the stream bed at the Wyckoff Avenue bridge.
