Zion sets family service, anniversary celebration Zion Lutheran Church of Saddle River will offer a special family service at 9:30 a.m. beginning Sept. 18 in addition to the regular service at 11 a.m. On Saturday, Oct. 15, the church will celebrate its 190th Anniversary with a dinner in Fellowship Hall that will be catered by the Brownstone Restaurant. The celebration will continue on Sunday, Oct. 16 with at 10 a.m. service (the only service offered that day) with a brunch afterward. For more information, call (201) 327-0655. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church is located at 96 East Allendale Road in Saddle River. Board of education to meet The Upper Saddle River Board of Education will meet on Monday, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. The meeting will be held in the media center at Cavallini Middle School, 392 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. All are welcome, including leashed pets, to meet with local pet shelters and rescue groups and the loving, adoptable dogs and cats worthy of a home of their own. The event will be attended by animal welfare, rescue, and service organizations, including the Last Resort Pet Rescue and Sanctuary, Humane Society of Bergen County, Bergen County ASPCA, Companion Animal Advocates, and others. This event includes a free rabies clinic for dogs and cats of Saddle River and the surrounding communities, and a free dental clinic. An examination of a pet’s teeth will be made and recommendations for improved dental health will be provided. An identification microchip implantation clinic will also be offered. There is a fee of $25 for chip implant, and the initial registration fee is $16.99. Goerke offers tips on memory improvement On Sept. 22, Matthew Goerke, creator of the “Memory Switch Program” will share techniques for developing an instant recall memory with results that can only be described as amazing. Davies, a retired teacher and award-winning quilter, will offer information about selecting and cutting fabrics, constructing the blocks, and assembling the quilt. A list of materials will be supplied at the first class. Participants will need to have access to a sewing machine. Special needs soccer available The Upper Saddle River Soccer Association and the Upper Saddle River Recreation Commission will sponsor a structured, small group soccer clinic for children in kindergarten through grade six who have special needs. The free clinics are not only open to Upper Saddle River residents, but to residents living in the surrounding community. Clinics will be held on Saturdays for 45 minutes beginning Sept. 17 at a time to be determined. Players will warm up, run drills, and scrimmage with each other. Built-in breaks and other accommodations will be made. Each participant will require a parent shadow for all clinics. All players will receive a T-shirt. Support offered to the newly single This fall, the Church of the Presentation will offer two support programs for adults dealing with the emotional upheaval of being newly single.
Healing Hearts, an eight-week program, will begin Monday, Sept. 26. This program is open to anyone experiencing the transition of separation, divorce, or the end of a relationship. The group will discuss grief, anger, loneliness, anxiety, fear, guilt, self esteem, and pathways to growth. Sessions will meet from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The Single World, which will meet on Thursdays beginning Sept. 15, will offer assistance in re-entering the single world with dignity and grace after a separation, divorce, death, or loss of a relationship. Topics for discussion include forming new relationships, finances, spiritual growth, dating, goals, and priorities. Juniors collect donations for veterans
Pet Adoption Day & Free Rabies Clinic set The Second Annual Saddle River Pet Adoption Day and Free Rabies Clinic, sponsored by Dr. Kathleen Hefner of the Animal Hospital of Saddle River and Tyco Animal Control, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. behind the Saddle River Firehouse at 85 East Allendale Avenue. The Saddle River Valley Junior Woman’s Club is seeking donations of clothing and personal products to benefit veterans’ homes located in Menlo Park, Paramus, and Vineland. The homes are open to men and women who have served in the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy. The residents, who live on a fixed living allowance, have their health needs met, but are in need of personal care items and basic clothing. The club is seeking donations of the following items: men’s new (with tags attached) sweatshirts and sweatpants in size large through 3XL, and T-shirts in medium through 3XL; deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, denture care products (no liquids); batteries; sunglasses with dark lenses; and electric razors.
