Salary ordinance adoption vote set for September 8
by John Koster
On Sept. 8, the Allendale Borough Council is scheduled vote on the adoption of the wage and salary ranges for municipal employees who are not covered by union contracts. If the new salary ordinance is approved, the salary range for the chief of police would range from $135,000 to $150,000. The salary of the borough clerk/administrative officer would range from $60,000 to $95,000, and the salary of the chief financial officer would range from $65,000 to $100,000. The director of operations, who is in direct control of the department of public works and exterior administration, would be paid from $85,000 to $115,000. The salary of the superintendent of the water utility would be between $75,000 to $90,000. Allendale main-
tains its own water facility and purchases water from external agencies in times of key need. The construction code official’s salary would range from $50,000 to $68,000. Allendale shares the services of a construction official with the Borough of Midland Park on a 50/50 basis. Other ranges in the salary ordinance cover parttime employees’ wages or stipends for overlapping job titles. Allendale eliminated the position of borough administrator a few years ago, over the protest of professional administrators’ groups, as a cost-cutting measure. The administrator’s responsibilities are shared by the borough clerk/administrative officer and by the director of operations, thus eliminating one major salary and the associated benefits. The council had considered eliminating the posi-

However, the council opted to retain the position of chief after statements from local and regional police officers and a study of all options. In other business, the council recently voted to apply for an Bergen County Open Space Trust Fund Grant with the understanding that the borough’s chances of garnering any significant money were small. The total amount available, said to be $1.2 million, will be portioned out among six different regions. The most that Allendale could expect, Mayor Vince Barra said, is $30,000, which would be used along with $30,000 in matching funds from the borough to refurbish the Crestwood Lake playground.
