Children collect for UNICEF On Halloween, Oct. 31, Allendale children will trickor-Treat for UNICEF. Supported by the Allendale PTO, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is an education and fundraising program designed to teach children about their peers in developing countries and empower them to help others in need. Residents are asked to support the children’s appeal for donations when they trick or treat with the orange UNICEF donation boxes. Founded in 1946, UNICEF helps save, protect, and improve the lives of children in over 150 countries through immunization, health care, therapeutic foods, clean water, sanitation, emergency relief, education, and more. Landscaper sponsors Clothing Drive Borst Landscape & Design will hold its annual Clothing Drive through Oct. 21 at Borst’s headquarters, 260 West Crescent Avenue in Allendale. Area residents are asked to bring new or gently-used clothing for men, women, and children, including outerwear, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Donations may be left in the truck that will be parked outside the office. The donations will benefit patrons of the Star of Hope Thrift Shop in Paterson and those served by Solid Foundation, a Midland Park skateboarding club that organizes charitable community projects in the area and makes regular visits to New York City to distribute coats, blankets, and food. Free rabies clinic set The Allendale Board of Health will sponsor a free rabies clinic for dogs and cats on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the ambulance building, 26 Arcadia Road. The vaccine will be administered by a veterinarian from the Allendale Animal Hospital. Residents are required to have their pets in a carrier or on a hand-held leash. Cub Scouts hold holiday wreaths fundraiser Cub Scout Troop 59 of Allendale is holding its Holiday Wreath Sale. Included in the sale are wreaths, sprays, centerpieces, and hangers. Children’s Colonial Day at Fell House Travel back in time for a Children’s Colonial Day at the John Fell House, 475 Franklin Turnpike in Allendale on Sunday, Oct. 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. The event is the Gold Award project of Elizabeth Gallina, an Upper Saddle River Girl Scout. Admission is free and open to children of all ages. The event will feature a variety of interactive activities for children, including colonial crafts, indoor parlor games, and outdoor relay races. Compete with or cheer on the children during sack races and three-legged races. There will be patriotic tattoos, face painting, and pumpkin decorating. Also a performance, sing along, and author reading of “The Ghosts of Allendale” will be presented. Apple cider and donuts will be served in the home’s kitchen. Library hosts Autumn Book Sale The Friends of the Allendale Library will host an Autumn Book Sale on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lee Memorial Library, 500 West Crescent Avenue in Allendale. A wide variety of almost-new fiction and nonfiction books for adults and children, including many current bestsellers, history, science fiction, education, and travel books, will be available at bargain prices, starting at 25 cents. The sale includes books on photography, gardening, cooking, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas. Videos and books on tape will also be for sale. Proceeds from the sale go directly to the library to purchase new materials. Rotary sets Thanksgiving Pie Sale The Allendale/Saddle River Rotary Club is holding its Thanksgiving Pie Sale, which will feature pies from Di Piero’s in Woodcliff Lake. Pre-order pies now for pickup on Nov. 21 or 22 in Allendale. Filling choices include pumpkin, apple, peach, blueberry, mince, coconut custard, and pecan. Crust choices include traditional or crumb. Pies are $10 for the small size, and $13 for the large size. AFEE seeks grant proposals The Allendale Foundation for Educational Excellence, Inc is accepting grant proposals for programs that will enhance the educational experience for students in Allendale’s Hillside and Brookside schools. Proposals will be accepted through Oct. 27. Parents, teachers, local business people, students, staff, and all other members of the community are encouraged to participate in submitting projects or programs that are in keeping with the foundation’s mission to enhance and broaden the educational experience for public school students. Thrift shop offers Saturday hours The Clothes Line Thrift Shop, located at Archer United Methodist Church at 37 East Allendale Avenue in Allendale, has announced its fall hours. The shop is open Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will be open every Saturday during the month of October from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The shop currently has a large selection of fall clothing, shoes, and accessories for children and adults. The shop also has an assortment of toys, books, and household items and a few special furniture pieces. Gently-used clothing and household items can be dropped off during regular shop hours.
