Fire prevention activities The Upper Saddle River Fire Department is sponsoring a Fire Prevention Week activity night on Wednesday, Oct. 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the firehouse, 375 West Saddle River Road, Upper Saddle River. Activities will include a fire safety smoke house, sprinkler demonstration trailer and other emergency services demonstrations, and firetruck rides for the children. Free refreshments will be served. Residents are encouraged attend this popular annual event. Flu vaccine available The Valley Hospital Department of Community Health and the Saddle River Board of Health will offer flu and pneumonia vaccines to all Saddle River residents age 65 and older. Vaccines will be given from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at borough hall, 100 East Allendale Avenue. Registration is required; call (201) 291-6090. Flu and pneumonia vaccines are covered by traditional Medicare Part B. Recipients must present their card at the time of service. Those with a HMO health plan may choose to go to their primary care provider or choose to pay $27 for a flu vaccination. Pneumonia vaccines will be available for those who have never had a previous pneumonia vaccination. The cost is $35. Flu shots are encouraged for those who are age 65 and over and those with chronic illnesses. Board of education to meet The Upper Saddle River Board of Education will meet on Monday, Oct. 17 at 8 p.m. The meeting will be held in the media center of the Cavallini Middle School, 392 West Saddle River Road. Newcomers announce events The Saddle River Valley Newcomers Club welcomes all residents from Saddle River and Upper Saddle River, regardless of the length of their residency. Harvest Festival set at Hopper-Goetschius House Fall is here, the crops are in, and there’s work to be done to get ready for winter. In early, America fall was also a time to be joyful. Take time to celebrate the “bounty of the harvest” on Sunday, Oct. 16 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the HopperGoetschius House Museum’s Annual Harvest Festival. The event is free to members. There is a nominal charge for non-members. Young people 16 and under will be admitted free. The event will feature a variety of activities for children and adults. The petting zoo will include goats, lambs, don-
keys, ducks, chickens, and rabbits. Pony rides will also be offered. There will also be demonstrations of colonial crafts, including spinning, chair caning, wood carving, quilting, bobbin lacemaking, and rug braiding. Watch the cider pressing in the old Dutch barn and enjoy a taste of fresh cider. Taste one of yesteryear’s recipes cooked over the open hearth fire in the out kitchen. There will be grilled hot dogs and soda to purchase. This year, there will be a special area featuring several antiques and crafts dealers and artists. The Hopper Goetschius House Museum is located on the corner of East Saddle River Road and Lake Street in Upper Saddle River. Cultural center offers children’s events The Saddle River Cultural Center is offering a production of “Three Wishes and The Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing” on Oct. 15 at 3 p.m. This folktale from “Aesop’s Fables,” tells the story of a hungry wolf who tries to outwit a shepherd. After the show, the puppeteer will demonstrate how he works the puppets the behind the scenes. The 45-minute show is suitable for children age four and up. Tickets are $12. On Saturday, Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. the center invites children of all ages to come in costume for a Halloween Party. The event will feature a DJ Laser Light Spooktacular, dancing, games, crafts, pumpkin decorating, doughnuts, and cider. Tickets are $12 and must be purchased in advance. Best Stuff Sale set Bergen Highlands United Methodist Church in Upper Saddle River will host its Best Stuff Sale on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Items for sale will include housewares, linens, furniture, small appliances, collectibles, jewelry, sporting equipment, electronics, CDS, and DVDs. A bistro will sell coffee, muffins, cookies, and other homemade goodies. In the afternoon, visitors may try a hot dog, Settlers Beans, or a beverage at an outdoor table. Private tour of MoMA offered The Upper Saddle River Library will offer a 90-minute private guided tour of the Museum of Modern Art on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. with local artist and teacher Bart D’Andrea. Zion sets family service, anniversary celebration Zion Lutheran Church of Saddle River will celebrate its 190th Anniversary with a dinner in Fellowship Hall that will be catered by the Brownstone Restaurant on Saturday,

The Saddle River Valley Lions Club recently participated in this year’s Mahwah Day. Thousands of people from Mahwah and surrounding communities enjoyed the fun and festivities that ended in a fireworks display. The Mahwah Dairy Queen sponsored the Saddle River Valley Lions booth and hundreds of ice cream cones were sold along with free balloons given to the children.
