Maureen Heller purchased the Waldwick-based café in February 2011 with the support and encouragement of her family and friends. She instinctively knew how to make the business a sparkling success. “We use the best ingredients we can find, and do a lot of shopping at local farmers markets. Everything is made to order so it’s fresh. Nothing is done ahead of time.” Maureen’s husband, Bill, consults with her in the day-to-day operations and oversees the finances. Maureen says he is instrumental in keeping things running smoothly. He says this allows her to focus Maureen Heller on the warm, personal service that is fast becoming the hallmark of the business. The café’s full-time chef, Karen Nunn, has been instrumental in the development of the menu selection of interesting breakfast fare and wholesome soups, salads and sandwiches. The salads include a popular Cranberry and Goat Cheese selection, a Cobb Salad, and a Chicken Oriental salad. Sandwiches include Grilled Chicken with Cheddar and Apples served with cider vinaigrette, a Veggie Wrap and a Tuna and Avocado Wrap. “In the cool weather, we make five fresh soups daily and our Turkey Chili,” Maureen adds. Recent selections included a Tomato and Basil Soup and a classic French Onion Soup. They collaborate on imaginative daily specials in the same vein based on what is seasonal and fresh. Daniela Ramirez, the full-time baker, is a recent graduate of Johnson and Wales University. She has kept up the La Vie en Rose house specialty scones, brownies, and a chocolate chip cookie that was rated Number 1 in Bergen County. Daniela also brings her creativity and passion to a seasonal variety of cupcakes, tarts and other desserts. Sunday brings a special brunch menu including Eggs or Crab Benedict and a variety of crepes, including an apple, pear, and mascarpone cheese option, or a chicken, spinach, and mushroom choice. Maureen may serve up a breakfast casserole or breakfast burrito. One recent brunch included pumpkin chocolate chip pancakes, a nod to the harvest season. The baked goods and menu selections along with personal service and attention also provide an excellent option for catering of breakfast meetings, lunch meetings and special events. Located at 10 West Prospect Street in Waldwick, La Vie en Rose offers seating for 20 and is open seven days: 7-4 Monday through Saturday and 8-2 on Sunday. Catering is available. Projects may vary by size and design suited for each client, but the challenge of creating a space that reflects an individual’s personality and comfort zone is always exciting.” Leslie does not have just one style that she replicates in each client’s home. “I typically meet with a client and get a feel for their preferences and level of taste. I try to keep designs clean and spatial. Even with intricate woodwork, there can be a strong feeling of flow and grace that I like to incorporate in all my designs, whether they are modern or traditional. This process keeps my career interesting and my mind always working on new ideas rather than using a formula each time. I pride myself on never repeating design so that each client will be receiving a one-of-a-kind design. I enjoy the challenge and giving 110% of my creative energy each time I begin a new project.” Leslie has worked on everything from penthouse apartments that have been gutted to a single bedroom in a modest suburban home. “I don’t view size as a relevant factor in the jobs I work on,” she adds. “I am more concerned with the commitment of the client and their willingness Leslie Strauss/LS Interiors to work as a team with me to achieve the special space they have been hoping for.” For more information, contact Leslie Strauss at based in Manhattan until she moved to Upper (917) 686-3375 or e-mail leslie@lesliestraussinteri Saddle River in 2002. “My projects have ranged from single rooms in ors.com. However, Leslie soon found herself searching for something that would be more stimulating. She found that in interior design. “Each job is new and different,” she says. When Leslie meets with a client for the first time, she evaluates the individual’s objectives for the space. After an initial meeting, the space is analyzed and the client’s needs are determined. She develops a schematic plan which includes color, furniture and fabric choices, then sets out to establish a relationship with the client that she describes as being similar to a marriage. “The most successful projects are those in which the client trusts and allows for my knowledge and creativity to transform their space to a new level,” she explains. “Clients who require more control often do not end up with the result they had hoped for. Trust is key in this ‘marriage’ between a designer and client.” Leslie adds that the majority of her business was
