The Waldwick Council was less than enthusiastic to a request brought forth by Councilman Frank Palladino last week to organize a parade to celebrate student achievements. His request was prompted by the recent victory of the Waldwick High School Boys Soccer Team in the state semi finals. The team ultimately lost 3-1 to Haddon Town- Council weighs advisability of ‘heroes’ parade ship in the Group 1 final. Palladino said residents had approached him about the possibility of holding a parade led by a fire truck to the high school for teams winning state sectional honors. His fellow council members indicated several concerns before advising Palladino to find out the details of the request before they can make a decision on the proposal. “It’s not a bad idea, but we as a council would have to decide how to handle this type of thing all the time. What you do for one, you have to do for all,” said Councilman Tom Giordano. He noted that a similar “welcome” organized for the baseball team last year had been unauthorized and had received resident complaints. “I’m not crazy about a town parade. It costs something to have one. I hate to open us up to that. It’s a diversion of our resources,” said Councilwoman Anita Bozzo. “They can have a pep rally at the school. Previously, kids were satisfied with that. Why now a parade?,” “We do take the fire trucks to events where it’s a bigger expense,” said Councilman Don Sciolaro, “but I wouldn’t want to see it as a frequent occurrence or an onerous expense,” he added. Giordano suggested that perhaps at the governing body level, inclusion on the “Wall of Heroes” at town hall would be more appropriate. Councilman Chuck Farricker said the item would be discussed at the council’s next work session once all the details are known. Zach Neugebauer, 16, the goalkeeper for the Waldwick High School’s boys’ soccer team, has been named Athlete of the Week. His team recently completed a successful Neugebauer named Athlete of the Week season that ended with a trip to the Group 1 final game. Neugebauer follows Waldwick High senior Ali Giordano, who won Athlete of the Week honors in October.
