Learn why tea was so important in the lives of 18th century people that fashion-conscious families posed for portraits with their tea sets. Discover whether Great Britain lost its American Colonies over “the cup that cheers.” Find out in this unusual costumed presentation of tea lore, history, songs, poetry, living history display and demonstration, which will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the Upper Saddle River Library, 245 Lake Street in Upper Saddle River. Refreshments will be served. This program is offered through the Horizon Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities. Designer offers holiday decorating tips FTD Master Designer Ken Norman Jr. will share his tips for dressing holiday tables on Thursday, Dec. 1. The program will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Upper Saddle River Library at 245 Lake Street in Upper Saddle River. Norman will create two centerpieces: one with a nature theme, the other in silver and white. The centerpieces will be given to members of the audience after the program. Auxiliary sets Holiday Luncheon & Boutique The Saddle River Valley Branch of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary will host its Annual Holiday Luncheon and Boutique on Tuesday, Dec. 6 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Ridgewood Country Club, 96 West Midland Avenue in Paramus. The boutique will feature gift items from Neiman Marcus, custom made Santas, handbags, jewelry, home gifts, and much more. Gold jewelry will also be bought. Tickets are $55 and include lunch, valet parking, wine, and mimosas. Checks should be made payable to VHA/SRVB and sent to Lynn Gildea, c/o Nancy Bush, 3 Pell Farm Road, Saddle River, NJ 07458. Proceeds from this event will go toward the auxiliary’s pledge to raise $500,000 for the Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine at Valley Hospital and Valley Home Care’s Maternal Child Health. Preschool program announces openings The Upper Saddle River School District has six general educational openings available in its Integrated Preschool Program. Applications for the September 2012 program are available at www.usrschoolsk8.com or call (201) 961-6300 to request an application by mail. The Integrated Preschool Program is a nursery school program that incorporates special education children with general education preschoolers. The program is held at Reynolds School. Special education youngsters are placed in the program through an evaluation process administered by the Special Services Department. Children attend five half-days a week from 8:30 to 11 a.m. The first 15 applicants will be screened in early December. Other applicants will be placed on a waiting list. The six openings will be offered by Dec. 21. The current tuition is $3,750; the 2012-13 tuition will be determined by June. To be eligible, a general education student must be four years old on or before Oct. 1, 2012. A birth certificate, copy of immunizations, and four proofs of residency will be required. The deadline for applications is Nov. 30, 2011. Register for recreation basketball Ho-Ho-Kus/Saddle River Recreational Basketball is holding online registration for boys and girls in grades one and two through Dec. 31, after which time a $25 late fee will be imposed. The cost is $80 for children in grades one and two. There is a maximum fee of $210 per family. Registration for those in grades three through eight is closed. The program is open to Ho-Ho-Kus and Saddle River residents. Book groups announce meetings Coffee Talk Book Group will discuss “The Human Stain” by Philip Roth on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 10:30 a.m. Copies of the books are available at the circulation desk. On Dec. 7, Novels at Night will meet at 7:30 p.m. The group will discuss Dave King’s “The Ha Ha.” Bridge Club seeks players The Bridge Club at the Upper Saddle River Library meets on Fridays at 10 a.m. Register at the library, which is located at 245 Lake Street. These individuals have sustained an unwavering commitment to The PhD Project’s mission and their positive leadership has resulted in significant encouragement and impact within the project’s network of minority business doctoral students and faculty. Since the project began in 1994, the number of minority faculty in U.S. university business schools has increased from 294 to 1,113 and there are 377 minority business doctoral students who will become faculty over the next few years. These doctoral students and faculty are role models and mentors attracting minority students to the study of business, thereby enhancing the talent pool available to corporate America.
