High school students who were honored are Emily Gurian for athletics, Jessica Santulli for English, and Victor DelCorro for art. The middle school students who received recognition are sixth grader Lauren Toolen, seventh grader Colin Post, and eighth grader Tara Herrera. Church sets country fair The Waldwick United Methodist Church, 25 Franklin Turnpike, is holding its 48th Annual Country Fair on Saturday, December 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s fair will feature baked goods, collectibles, craft cottage, gift baskets, jewelry, knitted sweaters and more. The Barnwood Inn will offer an excellent lunch at a reasonable price. The menu includes homemade soups, chili, hot dogs, burgers, grilled cheese and chicken salad sandwiches. Vendors are needed. Book Club to discuss McCall Smith novel The Waldwick Library Book Club will host a discussion of “The Sunday Philosophy Club” by Alexander McCall Smith on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 7:15 p.m. Murder and moral obligation mingle in this whimsical novel from the author of the smash hit “The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency.” Set in Edinburgh, the novel introduces a new detective series featuring the irrepressibly curious Isabel Dalhousie, a single woman of independent means who edits the esteemed Review of Applied Ethics and presides over the titular club. Copies of the book are available at the library’s circulation desk. The club welcomes new members and drop-ins regardless of residency. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. For more information, call (201) 652-5104. Holiday cake and pie fundraiser set The Friends of the Waldwick Library will again be offering gourmet cakes and pies for the holidays. The cakes and pies, provided by Carousel Cakes Bakery, are available at discount prices. These specialty desserts retail for $40 in gourmet shops, but may be ordered through the Waldwick Library at $15 per pie and $17 per cake. Black and white mousse, carrot, New York blackout, New York cheese, and mousse supreme are among the cake offerings. Pie selections include coconut custard, Toll House, pumpkin, pumpkin cheese, pecan, and a variety of fruit pies. Order forms, a catalogue of desserts, and other details are available at the library’s circulation desk. The deadline for placing orders for Christmas is noon on Saturday, Dec. 10 for Dec. 22 pickup. The Friends of the Waldwick Library is an organization that raises funds to provide programs and services that are beyond the scope of the library’s annual operating budget. Borough marks Veterans Day 2011 Waldwick marked Veterans Day with a parade and ceremony. Lions host children’s Christmas Party The Waldwick Lions Club will hold its annual Children’s Christmas Party on Sunday, Dec. 11 from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the Waldwick Administration Building, 63 Franklin Turnpike. All children who reside in Waldwick are welcome to attend and meet Santa Claus. Flu vaccine still available The Waldwick Health Department still has a limited amount of flu vaccines available. Anyone interested in receiving the vaccine may contact Public Health Nurse Carol Shepard at (201) 444-3914 for an appointment. Individuals must be at least 18 years of age to receive a flu vaccine. Residents must bring their Medicare Part B card in order to receive the vaccine at no cost. The Waldwick Health Department, through a contract with Northwest Bergen Regional Health Commission, will directly bill Medicare. A $25 fee will be charged to those who do not have Medicare Part B. Anyone who has a Medicare HMO, also known as Medicare Advantage, may choose to go to his or her primary care provider or pay $25 for a flu vaccination. Medicare HMOs will not be accepted at the flu program. Girl Scouts host winter celebration The Waldwick Girl Scouts will host the Annual Holiday Celebration on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. on the lawn of the Waldwick Library, 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. All are welcome. Music and refreshments will be available. Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to the Center for Food Action.
