This January, students at Waldwick High School will have the opportunity to explore various career options at the Career Café, a program that will be offered in the school during lunch periods. This monthly program is being spearheaded by Principal Kevin Carroll in conjunction with the Waldwick High School Guidance Office. The program will complement the array of other services already offered at Waldwick High. Career Café organizers said the goal was to imple-

ment a monthly career exploration program that would be an engaging way to increase career awareness among students. The district will post a list of available careers being offered by volunteer presenters, and students will be asked to sign up for the choices that interest them. Plans call for the students to meet in a section of the hall outside the cafeteria near the math and science wing. Interested students will meet during their specific lunch periods. The Waldwick Chamber of Commerce’s website has a new webmaster. Silvio Manziano of Waldwick Computer Services (formerly known as TekSynergy, LLC), temporarily took over the site’s maintenance from Doug Yuen of Efficient Websites while Yuen is traveling abroad for a few months. Manziano has added his own touches, providing a countdown clock to the 5K Run on May 6, 2012, posting photos and announcements of chamber events, keeping up to date with forms members may upload, and showcasing the featured member of the month. “It’s worth checking the site for updates and information,” said Chamber President Christine Figliuolo. “We are grateful to Silvio for stepping up to the plate so enthusiastically.” Manziano is also an avid runner. He ran the recent NYC Marathon in 4 hrs. 1 min., raising $3,000 for TEAM Continuum, a cancer charity. He also ran in the Waldwick 5K, finishing the course in 22 min. 40 sec. He is now helping Run Director Stan Kowalski in preparations for next year’s event.

lunch, students who participate in the Career Café program will be asked to bring their own food that day and eat while the presenter speaks. Students will be encouraged to participate in the discussion and will be able to ask questions. Career speakers will be asked to make their presentations at all three lunch periods. Each presentation should be approximately 20 minutes in length. Speakers will be asked to sit with the students or may use a podium. Presenters from the high school recently discussed the program with the Waldwick Chamber of Commerce. “We thought it was a way to tap into your resources and connections with the community,” Principal Carroll told Chamber members. Waldwick Chamber President Christine Figliuolo noted that participation in the Career Café would be a great way for business people to connect with the community. “One-on-one is important,” she added. “You have to put yourself out there. Personal interaction is important.” She also said business people who participate in the Career Café would help students get a taste of what their own futures might hold. Volunteer speakers who are interested in participating in this program are invited to contact the Waldwick High School Guidance Office at (201) 652-9000, extension 5007, or e-mail cassidyl@waldwick.k12.nj.us. Prospective speakers should be prepared to provide the school with brief descriptions of their careers and educational backgrounds.
