Book groups announce meetings Author Alison Larkin will join the Coffee Talk Book Group on Nov. 17 at 10:30 a.m. to discuss her novel, “The English American.” Coffee Talk meets the second Thursday of the month at the Upper Saddle River Library, 245 Lake Street. In December, the group will discuss “The Human Stain” by Philip Roth. Copies of the books are available at the circulation desk. Novels at Night will meet on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. The group will discuss Christopher Hitchen’s “Hitch22.” On Dec. 7, the selection is “The Ha Ha” by Dave King. Club announces honorees, meeting The Saddle River Garden Club has announced the recipients of the organization’s Random Acts of Beauty Award. The honorees include the Saddle River Mayor and Council for the beautiful flower beds on borough property, and Roz and Steven Kenny of Ho-Ho-Kus. This award is presented in recognition of people who have made their surroundings beautiful and to encourage people to take pride in their property. On Nov. 15, the club will hear a discussion on the care of mature trees from Patrick Burke of the Bartlett Tree Service. Election Day Book Sale set The Friends of the Upper Saddle River Library will hold an Election Day Book and Bake Sale on Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held on the lower level of the library, 245 Lake Street in Upper Saddle River. In addition to fiction and non fiction books for all ages, the sale will offer over 100 recently donated cookbooks. Books about sewing and bridge will also be available. Free rabies clinic available The Upper Saddle River Board of Health and Northwest Bergen Regional Health Commission will hold its annual free rabies clinic on Monday, Nov. 21 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Upper Saddle River Fire House at 375 West Saddle River Road. Dogs on leashes are welcome from 6 to 7 p.m. (No retractable leashes, please.) Cats in carriers are welcome from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Pets of residents from other municipalities are welcome to attend. Learn why tea was so important in the lives of 18th century people that fashion-conscious families posed for portraits with their tea sets. Discover whether Great Britain lost its American Colonies over “the cup that cheers.” Find out in this unusual costumed presentation of tea lore, history, songs, poetry, living history display and demonstration, which will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the Upper Saddle River Library, 245 Lake Street in Upper Saddle River. Refreshments will be served. This program is offered through the Horizon Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities. Register for recreation basketball Ho-Ho-Kus/Saddle River Recreational Basketball is holding online registration for boys and girls in grades one through eight. Registration for those in grades three through eight will be open through Nov. 27. Please note that a $25 late fee will be added after Nov. 20. Registration for those in grades one and two will be accepted through Dec. 31, after which time a $25 late fee will be imposed. The fee for children in grades three through eight is $100. The cost is $80 for children in grades one and two. There is a maximum fee of $210 per family. On Tuesdays, yoga classes for all levels meet at 9:45 a.m. Gentle Stretch for All meets at 11 a.m. Chi Kung Classes meet on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. through Nov. 30. Zumba classes are held on Fridays from 10 to 11 a.m. Bridge Club seeks players The Bridge Club at the Upper Saddle River Library meets on Fridays at 10 a.m. Register at the library, which is located at 245 Lake Street. Rotary sets Thanksgiving Pie Sale The Allendale/Saddle River Rotary Club is holding its Thanksgiving Pie Sale, which will feature pies from Di Piero’s in Woodcliff Lake. Pre-order pies now for pickup on Nov. 21 or 22 in Allendale. Filling choices include pumpkin, apple, peach, blueberry, mince, coconut custard, and pecan. Crust choices include traditional or crumb. Pies are $10 for the small size, and $13 for the large size. Wieseneck to address parent group Linda Wieseneck of the Bergen County Special Services’ CAPE Resource Center will discuss the developmental disabilities system on Nov. 14. The program, which will be presented to Ramsey and Saddle River parents of children with special needs, will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 55 Wyckoff Avenue in Ramsey. Wieseneck, a social worker with over 30 years of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, has worked for Bergen County Special Services School District as a case manager for students with behavioral challenges and autism spectrum disorders for 13 years. She is currently the director of the BCSSSD CAPE Resource Center and works with parents and professionals in the field of disabilities. The CAPE Resource Center is located in the Community Services Building in Paramus. The center’s staff connects individuals with special needs and professionals to accessible and appropriate services, information, education, and resources regardless of age or disability.
