Kolvek to discuss ornamental grasses Bill Kolvek will discuss ornamental grasses at the Nov. 14 meeting of the Ho-Ho-Kus Garden Club. The session will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Hall, 333Warren Avenue. Kolvek, who is locally celebrated for his wide knowledge of perennials, will offer tips on choosing appropriate ornamental grasses. Register for recreation basketball Ho-Ho-Kus/Saddle River Recreational Basketball is holding online registration for boys and girls in grades one through eight. Registration for those in grades three through eight will be open through Nov. 27. Please note that a $25 late fee will be added after Nov. 20. Registration for those in grades one and two will be accepted through Dec. 31, after which time a $25 late fee will be imposed. The fee for children in grades three through eight is $100. The cost is $80 for children in grades one and two. There is a maximum fee of $210 per family. The program will run December through March with Saturday games for students in grades three and four. Grades five through eight will play weeknight and Saturday games. The program is open to Ho-Ho-Kus and Saddle River residents. Harvest Sunday Food Drive set Saint Bartholomew’s Church will hold its Harvest Sunday Thanksgiving Food Drive on Nov. 20. The collec-
tion will be taken to the Ramapough Mountain Indians in Mahwah and other families in need. Donations of food may be brought the church on Saturday, Nov. 19. Anyone who wishes to purchase a gift certificate may leave it at the church office or mail to: Saint Bartholomew’s Church, 70 Sheridan Avenue, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ 07423. Clean Communities Day set In partnership with the Clean Communities program and the Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus, the Girl Scouts of Ho-HoKus will hold a one day fall cleanup to assist seniors or shut-ins on Thursday, Nov. 10. (Rain date: Nov. 11.) Borough seniors and shut-ins who need assistance with fall cleanup are encouraged to contact the borough hall. The service will include the collection and bagging of leaves, trash, debris, and recyclables. Those who request the service must be home during the cleanup, which is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. The program is available on a first come, first served basis and is limited to 10 properties. Tools and bags will be provided to those who volunteer. Police offer announcements via Twitter The Ho-Ho-Kus Police Department is now featuring special announcements that will be available to the public via Twitter. The link to Twitter may be found on the department’s website, www.ho-ho-kuspolice.com. Messages will cover various non-emergency situations, such as road closings and delayed school openings. Emergency information and other situations that affect the community will still be disseminated via Reverse 911. VFW hosts Coins for a Cause Area residents are encouraged to donate their spare coins to Washington Elm VFW Post 192 (Ho-Ho-Kus/ Ridgewood) by participating in Coins for a Cause on Nov. 12. Participants should visit Boiling Springs Savings Bank, 531 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Those who use Boiling Springs’ free coin count-
ing machine and donate their coins will support Post 192’s mission. One hundred percent of the coins donated will benefit Post 192. The VFW welcomes citizens of the United States who have been honorably discharged from the armed forces and who have served, or are on active duty, in a combat zone, received imminent danger pay, or received special pay for duty subject to hostile fire. The VFW seeks to preserve and strengthen camaraderie among its members. The organization assists worthy comrades, perpetuates the memory and history of the dead, and assists their widows and orphans. Reminder of new polling location Residents in election District 2 in Ho-Ho-Kus are reminded that their polling location has been changed. On Nov. 8, voters District 2, which is east of Route 17, must report to Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Hall at 333 Warren Avenue and cast their ballots in the ambulance corps room on the second floor. Auxiliary hosts Annual Luncheon The Ho-Ho-Kus Branch of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary will host its first Autumn Membership Luncheon on Nov. 8 at noon. The event will be at the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn and Tavern. Anne Miller of The Little Flower Shoppe in Ridgewood will demonstrate seasonal decorating ideas. The cost is $30 all-inclusive with a cash bar additional. The luncheon is open to all members of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary branches, and interested members of the public. The Ho-Ho-Kus Branch of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary is dedicated to the support of Valley Hospital, and last year contributed $8,000, quadruple its regular annual pledge of $2,000, to the Valley Center for Women’s Heart Health. This year’s $2,000 pledge is dedicated to the Valley Hospital’s Maternal Fetal Medicine and Maternal Child Health Program. The Annual Membership Luncheon is not a fundraiser.
