Waldwick November 2, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 3 Spending, communications are issues in Waldwick race Waldwick Councilman Tom Giordano, a Republican, and Democrat Bruce Mitchell are vying for the mayor’s seat now held by Democrat Russell “Buddy” Litchult. The mayor announced in January that he would not seek reelection to a second term. Incumbent councilmen Andrew Brennecke and Frank Palladino are being challenged for the two available council seats by newcomers Andrew Frey and Rich Drury. The election is set for Nov. 8. The Republican team promises to continue working on curbing spending. The Democrats pride themselves on being good listeners and say they will continue to seek out resident input. Following are the statements submitted by the two teams of candidates. Giordano, Brennecke and Palladino “We will continue to work hard to reduce unnecessary spending. To accomplish this, we already have a plan in place with our neighboring towns for shared services in the area of road repaving, vehicle maintenance, our salt shed, and our municipal court. Hershman, MD, a Waldwick physician, was honored by the Waldwick mayor and council last week for volunteering his services for nearly 30 years to administer flu vaccines to residents. He was presented with a proclamation by Mayor Russell Litchult, who proclaimed Tuesday, Oct. 25 as Dr. Jerald B. Hershman Day. “We’re very proud of him. He was always there when we needed him. And he’s a nice guy, too,” said Mayor Litchult. Dr. Hershman, who also assisted the Waldwick police and fire departments when they needed him, served in the Navy Medical Corps, rising to the rank of captain in the United States Naval Reserve. He later was assigned to the Marines 4th Division. In 1992 he crossed served to the New York Army National Guard, retiring as a brigadier general (BVT) and a state surgeon emeritus. On September 11, 2001, he was mobilized back to his unit at Camp Smith, New York in the wake of the tragedy at the World Trade Center. “We thank him for his unending volunteer services to the borough and its residents and for his unselfish time and energy that he devoted to our community,” reads the proclamation. As we have done in the past, we will continue to listen to the needs and concerns of every resident and formulate a solution that will benefit all. “Our team will be focused on many good things for this community. “We will work towards maintaining an excellent credit rating for Waldwick. “We will work with our police, fire, ambulance corps and all of our community organizations to ensure a safe, beautiful town, that we proudly call “Our Home”. “(We will) explore new avenues for budget reduction.
